Picture of the Week Year two 03/15/09 - 03/29/09
Welcome to POTW #54

Peter Zack invited me to host this week's show--quite an honor given the great stuff I've seen in these threads! This only goes to show that you don't have to be a pro--or even consistently good--to participate so don't be shy. I'm really looking forward to seeing what turns up this week!

Rules as always:

1) No theme just your favorite stuff.
2) Let's keep it to about 4-6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week .
3) Any Pentax camera is fine, film, P&S, DSLR (or Samsung DSLR)
4) Date : Sunday 03/15/09 - Sunday 03/29/09
5) Enter anything you shot last week or this current week until the thread closes.

I was out in the yard this week enjoying the arrival of Spring. There's a lot of work to be done out there but I couldn't put down the camera ;~)

Not a bad week for me. Got close to a juvenile Bald Eagle with the FA*300 and Tamron 1.4 (sorta funky bokeh though). Almost got some good deer shots with the 300 and Pentax 1.7 AF TC. A waterfall/dam in Yarmouth NS with the Sigma 24mm f2.8 and a Cokin ND8 with CPL combo. A shot of Mahone Bay with the same lens.

Have a great week everyone. I'm off to Newfoundland for a week and might capture a Moose or 2 if I can.

Nice young eagle, Peter. What was the shutter speed on the waterfall pics, for curiosity?

Here are a few more from the Upper Park in the good weather periods between the rains.

I've got a bad case of eagle-envy, Peter! I like those River shots, too.

dadipentak - you captured some nice color with those flowers

Peter - The river shots are excellent, and I really like the last shot as well.

madmikess - I like the bright yellow in the shot.

kevindt - It's looking like spring where you are. Nice captures.

I'm currently taking a photography class at the local community college. Here are a few shots taken yesterday as part of a homework assignment.

Thanks guys. Some good stuff posted already this morning. Dave, the last 2 flower shots are excellent. But you'll have a hard time topping last week's version!

madmikess, Nice colours and great use of DOF. Nice shot.

kevindt, I really ike that first shot and the river shot is nice as well. Good series. As for mine, I used a CPL on the lens (Sigma 24mm f2.8 which I just sold to get a DA12-24mm) So that dropped the EV by a stop or so. Then added a Cokin ND 8 and closed the lens down to f22 giving me a shutter speed of 1 second. Not bad in bright morning daylight. I'll be in that area again soon and will go there at dawn to get some more shots.

Cool shots Frank. The 2nd and 3rd are the best. I really like the lines in the 3rd one with the curves and straight lines.

Here are a few images that I took in the last few days. The Wright's Ferry Bridge image was taken in tungsten, with a graduated tobacco filter and the other two were taken yesterday at a local mud sale.

dadipentak - jealous of those colours!

peter - lucky you on the eagle; deer #2 looks like it's flying; never get tired of smooth waterfalls

madmikess - lovely colour contrast

kevindt - you make me long for spring to take hold here

xs400 - looks like you're learning good stuff about line & repetition!

Explored North side of Gatineau Park, Quebec, yesterday, including the Lusk Caves (entrances, that is: water's a bit chilly for aquatic spelunking!). Made me realize how well a fisheye lens suits the cramped curvy quarters:

And while I'd brought the 300 to be prepared in case of interesting wildlife, I missed shooting the otter that whipped across our path but still gave the lens a workout with some nice ice formations:

and proved that in the outdoors, 300 on APS-C ain't too long for a headshot:

Those are really great photos, David--now I want one of those fishy lenses!

I like your third shot the best, Frank.

Dadipentak - those flowers are great!
Peter - that eagle is fabulous, although I don't know whether I like the bokeh or not... keep looking at it...
Madmikess - I like the colours in your gull shot!
Kevindt - #2 is outstanding! Sharp, great colour...
Frank - the B&W's are very good, especially when you look at them 'seperately', without the upper or lower one!
Cindy, I like the second one very much, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at.....
David - nice fisheye shots!

Here some of the convent 'Domus Novae Lucia' in Ter Apel, NL, a monastry we visited last Saturday. Shot with the Zenitar fisheye.

Hey Rense, thanks for the comments. Photo two is a zoomed-in shot of Amish buggies that were for sale. Shot three is a huge old pot of home-made chicken corn soup, which is a PA Dutch favorite.
