Welcome to Picture of the Week 06/28/09 - 07/12/09 #69
Posted By: georgweb, 07-05-2009, 02:17 PM

Hi everybody,
I'd like to start the next round of your Picture of the Week, so here it is. Please feel free to post anything you like from last week or this week.

Thank you Bruce/Bramela for hosting last weeks POTW.

Please keep them coming this week just like before:
1) No theme just your favorite stuff.
2) Let's keep it to about 4-6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.
3) Any Pentax camera is fine, film, P&S, DSLR (or Samsung DSLR)
4) Date : Sunday 06/28/09 to Sunday 07/12/09. Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

Looking forward to your photos,
Georg (the other)

Thanks for hosting this week. That is a very interesting looking bird. I like the blue on his wings. I'm heading up north early this week to "Science North". I'm hoping to have some interesting shots to share.

Georg,
Thanks for hosting.

We had a lot of Independence Day events here in Philly this week. On Friday, the Philly Pops orchestra played their annual event in front of Independence Hall. Here's a couple of shots.....

Before they arrived......

Some of the early arrivals.....

Managed to get a bit of time to process the pictures I've got in my camera before I leave for my trip tomorrow.

1. Some cute little white flowers.

2. Some strange caterpillar that was eating my wife's flower garden. She was not impressed.

3. Maybe the results of that caterpillar????

Wow Georg, I think a "Jay" birder could make a career traveling the world finding all the different varieties of jay birds to photograph and catalog.
Oldschool: nice shots of what I imagine was a very enjoyable concert.
eccs: nice "fireworks" in the first shot and great captures of the catepillar & butterfly.

A couple non-fireworks but still celebratory shots from yesterday:

Oldschool, looks like you've had decent weather on the big day, must have been quite a nice atmospere at the night concert. Love the patriotic neck ties !

eccs, real good and colorful macro/close-up shots ! That caterpillar looks hungry .-) Seems like a Gipsy Moth would come out of it. In the article there is the old story about a french scientist who brought eggs of that moth over to North America. Sure enough "some of the moths escaped from his lab" and of course lateron huge plagues of that animal would defoliage enormous surfaces of forest (i.e. Ontario). Their eating "sounds eerily like a light to moderate rain." Beware of the hairs, could cause allergic reactions.
Good luck up in the north !

Jim/Venturi
, #2 for me and I guess it was just at the right moment. The lady in red just realized there was gonna be a pic but not too long waiting (that's my guessing of course but it looks like it to me). I see other people preferred beer over water melon .-) You are probably right about the variety in Jay birds. I never thought the one I captured was one (only knew the german name) til I looked it up.

Here's an abstract from a dancer with a funky golden cape

Keep your pics coming please,
Georg (the other)

Boy, that's a boring looking moth for such a colorful caterpillar. Can't win them all I guess.

I spent the past week camping in the Adirondacks and as usual it rained. Thankfully the Pentax K10D is weatherproof. The first shot is a loon on Lake Eaton taken by a loon who took his camera in the rain on a kayak. It wasn't a total washout and I have a few hundred shots to go through. Also a butterfly catching the 5 minutes of sunshine last week and some 4th of July waterskiers.

(xj)John(no), love those birds. Looks like you bowed deep down to have them parallel to the ground (#2), nice catch. Apart from always looking up them birds in the fabulous Internet Bird Collection I'm a real noob when it comes to flowers. Love the white one and I know how hard it is to get some decent red flower shots, as I always tend to blow out the reds (like I'd expect on your penultimate but it's come out just fine).

Eccs, the Gipsy Moth might look boring but its got that swiveling fans on its head and after all the damage it has done in its previous life it's better to keep a low profile .-)

Reeftool, apart from the pics I always learn a little English alongside here, thanks for the loon capturing the loon. Always good to have a sealed cam. #2 has incredible colors and #3 has caught the decisive moment, great action and I wish it was even more cropped. In regards to #1's background, was there any special PP involved?

Here's some nifty machines erraticly running around and drawing at the same time

Keep them coming, rain or shine .-)

Here's a few more from the 4th celebration. Sheryl Crow performed for about half a million people in a free outdoor concert....

Staying cool before the show.....

We were pretty far away, but the evening was just beautiful.....

Of course there were fireworks after the concert (I'm still learning how to shoot them)....

Not my photos per se, but I'm postin' them anyway because these truly are my "pictures of the week"...

Last Monday we got confirmation of what we already knew.

Today we saw significant growth, good strong heartbeat and visible movement.

So fingers crossed for a couple silly old farts going for #2 around the first week of February 2010.
