Humans Vs Nature: The Oncoming Plague

This is literally the 250th Eastern Lubber Grasshopper to land upon our screen since March. They're constantly jumping up on it. I've been doing a rough head count, taking pictures of some and trying to get some idea of how many of these we actually have in our area since March. I cannot usually walk out of our door without seeing at least a few of them. They do seem to be nearly everywhere. This particular grasshopper is a fully grown adult and as such he is now relatively harmless at this stage. Our flowering garden trees however, which are nearly bereft of foliage now, clearly show the ravages of several months of intense grasshopper nymph munching.
In fields not too far from here in the midst of thousands of carefully cultivated edible plants grown for local and national food markets there are so many of these grasshoppers, and others, this year that some local farmers have simply thrown up their hands and walked away from the disaster.
They have tried but the unusual weather conditions of the past winter have ensured that the grasshoppers are coming in numbers that are far past the norm for these insects. Many of the farmers simply cannot spray enough or physically kill enough of these grasshoppers and their voracious nymphs to keep them under control. They have simply given up.
This vast plague of grasshoppers will cost not only the local farmers the a good majority of their crops for this season, but it will also cost consumers across the county MILLIONS more in terms of being able to afford fresh produce for the rest of this year.
