Title Rolling off the bridge
Description It was suggested I try submitting this here.

A description:

This photo requires some description. I don't know if the descriptions are ever shown in these contests or not but here it is.

This is an HO scale model of Wabash #2907. The history of the locomotive is unimportant but the Scale is. It stands less than 2 inches tall from the rails. Typically taking a photo of such a thing, one is looking down on the top of the model. Very unnatural viewpoint. To make it more 'realistic' looking, one must get the center of the lens focusing on the scale height of a scale person taking the photo (who, in HO scale is less than an inch tall).

The trick is to use a Front surfaced mirror at an angle and aim the camera downward such that you are now focusing on a lower point on the model in what would be a straight on fashion. In this case, just above the coupler area. You use a Front surface mirror to avoid ghosting from the mirror glass.

The entire photo you see, Is a reflection. The train, the bridge, the track, the little bit of scenery, are all real. Once the photo is taken, to get it correct, it must be mirrored again in photoshop (or other post processing) or it will be backwards. The Smoke and steam are added in Photoshop for effect.

Rolling off the bridge

Jeff,

An interesting technique. I'm glad you took the time to explain it, as I doubt I could have figured it out. To be truthful, it took a minute or so to determine it was a model before reading your description.

I don't know how tightly this image is cropped but my eyes want to see the whole bridge support on the left. An added benefit of this (if it is possible) is that it will provide additional space for the train to move towards and will help balance the train within the composition.

Rolling off the bridge

Thanks, Tim.. The idea that it took a minute to figure out it wasn't real is really a great complement. If I can leave them wondering, then I feel I've done the job I set out to do.

I think part of the reason it got bounced was the size, too small. I've lost the original file to bad CD-ROM backups so what I have here is it. The reflection in the mirror though is actually quite small and if I remember correctly, the crop got rid of everything that didn't add to the photo. At this point I don't remember what was there on the left. I may retry one of these at a later date so I can at least get a proper size on it.
