Robert Moses "Lefty" Grove
| Description |
Robert Moses "Lefty" Grove.1931 american league MVP winner, the first (BBWAA) mvp awarded.Lefty won the award over Babe Ruth and Lou Gerig with a 31-4 season(one of only 3 30+ game winngs seasons in the modern era)while tying a record with 16 straight wins and winning the major league tripple crown. Some of Lefty's other accomplishments include winning 300 games while losing only 141 earning a winning percentage of .680 which ranks 8th all-time(none of the 7 in front of him won more than 236 games). In 1928 Lefty became the 7th pitcher in history to strike out the side on 9 pitches and barely over 1 month later became the first pitcher to do it twice(only 2 other players have been able to match that feat, N.Ryan and S.Kofax however Lefty remains the only one to do it twice in the same season).Lefty's 9 american league era titles are easily the best in history with only one other player winning more than five(Roger Clemens had 7).Voted greatest left handed pitcher ever in 1969,voted to the all-century team in the 1990's and arguably the "greatest pitcher that ever lived".There are only 2 places a major league MVP award can be seen, the baseball HOF or this one in the library in Lefty's home town of Lonaconing,Md.
