Breakaway layup
Actually, that was ISO 10,000, not 1,000. I could have frozen the action more at 1/400th or 1/500th, but then I would have had to bump up the ISO to 12,800 or 16,000. That would have increased noise even more than what I was getting at 10,000. It's all a compromise, and I liked what I was getting at 1/320th well enough to stick with it for most of the shots. You can adjust the tradeoffs to suit your situation and your tastes.
The key thing is that lens (or something equivalent). You can't get shots like this without f/2.8 or a similarly fast lens. I haven't tried the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8, but I've been happy with the performance of my Sigma.
