My dog sees me as his lord and master, onto whom he is (mostly) very obedient. Under normal circumstances that's great. But it means he will rarely look me in the eye because in dog body language, that is challenging my position as the leader of his pack. That extended to not looking into the lens in front of my face either. But shots of animals are far more appealing if the eyes are in sharp focus and looking directly at the lens. It meant I had to focus and shoot FAST. So how do you even get the dang dog to look at you? Call him of course. And being obedient, what does he do? Glance at me to get a sense of what I want, and then immediately walk toward me. There goes focus!
