Portrait of Gabby
| Description |
This is a portrait of my awesome -- and quite pregnant -- sister-in-law Gabby. My four brothers, Gabby and I all stopped in at this little restaurant in Monterey, CA for some breakfast before hitting the road and returning home to Los Angeles on Sunday July 13th after a nice, long weekend filled with natural beauty and quality family time. She happened to be sitting directly across from me, facing a bright window with the perfect amount of cloud-diffused light coming through and I couldn't help but snap a few shots. No flash - not into it - just pure amazing natural light. To me, this is one of those shots that reminds me just how amazing film is, and how lighting truly is everything in the realm of photography, as blatantly obvious as that sounds. We've gotten so spoiled with the almost unreal advances in technology which allow us to take so-so images and then make them magical in our post-processing programs, but shooting film has been a humbling [and pricey] experience and has taught me that film loves light, and there's no amount of editing that can rescue a blown exposure, so you'd better take that extra bit of time and effort to find the perfect spot, to find the perfect light and to get the image right.
