In the UK, because of the destruction of our coal industry in the 1980s for political reasons, these wonderful vehicles usually have to burn imported coal. They often described a steam-powered, but of course they are coal-powered - steam is the means of transmission of energy from the combustion of coal to the cylinders that convert that energy into movement.
