The man who built our house was a huge fan of Japanese maples, of which there are maybe 200 varieties. Over many years he traveled widely and brought home sprigs of the rare ones he found around the US. Hence, the yard is now full of 30-year-old red maples which prompted a real estate agent (and amateur horticulturist) to tell me that we bought the land and they threw in the house.
