Sailing into a Pacific Sunset
| Description |
This was taken while at sea in the Pacific, steaming into the western sunset on board the USS Bon Homme Richard, while engaged in an Underway Replenishment with the USS Milius. We were on our way to Hawaii during the Trident Warrior exercise in June 2008. I was out on the starboard elevator, about 30 feet over the water, with a 40 knot wind in my face. With both ships in motion along with the sea, the only way to get such a shot, was with my fish eye lens at 10mm. The shot has a field of view of 180 degrees wide, edge to edge.
Before leaving, I almost bought a wide angle DA 12-24 to take along. I am somewhat glad my wife made me delay the purchase, as I would have almost certainly had the wrong lens on the camera and the shot would have been only half as wide.
