S-M-C/Super Macro-Takumar 50mm F4

Description:
This macro lens existed in both Macro-, Super- and Super-Multi-Coated variants. The Macro-Takumar was differently constructed compared to the later variants and went out to 1x magnification rather than the 0.5x of the later lenses. The optics are the same for all three variants.

Pros: 1:1, build quality and lens size
Cons:

This is for the preset macro-Takumar. Some people are taken aback by the preset diaphragm. However, once I got the hang of using this type of diaphragm, its actually better on dSLR. The second ring allows the diaphragm to be opened up for focusing and easily stopped down for the image capture.

Note: I think there is enough differences that the macro-Takumar should be separate from the later designs.

Pros: Build, color rendering, sharpness
Cons: None save the limitations of a manual focus M42 lens

Had a Super Takumar version and sold it as not much different from the (excellent) M 50 macro I had at the time. Still own the Macro-Takumar preset version I picked up later, as 1:1 native magnification is very handy. It is a great lens; the only downside is the increasing dimness in the viewfinder with stopping down (on a K mount camera anyway) and the lack of auto-focus, if that is your thing. Note that the price I paid is inflated, as it includes the $100 I spent to get it repaired when it came almost in pieces from eBay.

Pros: build, price
Cons: slow, only goes to 0.5x
Sharpness: 10    Aberrations: 10    Bokeh: 6    Handling: 10    Value: 6    Camera Used: Spotmatic, K5II, Kx

I got spoiled by the super brilliant Micro-Nikkor 55/2.8 before acquiring this one.
Nice good macro lens, miles better than most modern ones though

Update (2019)
I gave my old one away and after many years decided to get another one
This time to use for slide copying with a Bellows
Focusing is just silky, and the optics are very smooth and keep the flat plane
Image quality is very good, and tonal rendition is smooth

Definitely a suave lens!

Pros: very sharp, beautiful to focus
Cons: not the fastest

I have waited for 4 months or so to see if my opinion has changed, and it hasn't...

Brilliant lens, very well built as in keeping with takumars. Found it very useful as I quite like getting in close and is very usable as a standard lens too. Get one if you see one - they don't make them like this anymore!

Very happy

Pros: Capable of 1:1 macro
Cons: Is F4 - but I knew that
Sharpness: 10    Aberrations: 9    Bokeh: 9    Handling: 10    Value: 10

My copy is the pre-set early version with the double aperture rings at the front of the lens. Has all the Super Takumar characteristics: super long silky smooth focussing, all metal construction. Buy it if you find one- this one is from ebay and used to belong to a school according to the engraving.....

Pros: Excellent build quality, sharp,
Cons: The lens is only f/4, which makes the viewfinder dimmer for focussing

I've had this lens for just less than 1 year. I purchased it with a full set of Pentax extension tubes. It's a beautifully crafted lens.

I find this lens to exhibit great bokeh in most situations. Very sharp. Smooth focussing.

Highly recommended.
