Pros: Fast for a 1957 lens
Cons: Vignetting on 24x36

I would not have expected such quality from a simple doublet lens. It suffers from some vignetting on 24x36 at the greatest apertures. Good for sunsets. Bokeh seems to be interesting. This is a rack and pignon focusing system lens, that allows a quick focus when you are used to this system. The rear part is removable.
I would not recommend it to a user because the 500/4.5 is not extremely expensive compared to it and is slightly better, but if you can get it for, let's say, $300 or less, this can be a good solution.

Pros: Bokeh, aberrations and sharpness, perspective compression
Cons: Weight and size
Sharpness: 8    Aberrations: 7    Bokeh: 9    Handling: 7    Value: 10    Camera Used: Sony Alpha 7RII

The question, as usual, is whether scores should be absolute, or considering the lens' age & price.

If the former, retouch my sharpness and aberrations scores down a bit (I don't have a modern 500mm lens, but I have no doubts that if I could splash £10k on the Sony 500mm f4 GMaster I'd give that one 10 and the Tak would fall behind somewhat).

If scores are to consider the age and price of the lens, then retouch them up a bit. The lens is a surprise in terms of both sharpness and aberrations. Colour rendition & bokeh are fantastic, in the best Takumar tradition.

Handling is very good, for a lens of this size and weight. The focusing system is precise and a pleasure to use. The tripod collar is well designed and well placed: it balances well the lens with my FF mirrorless Sony. Only complain I'd have is the built-in hood: far to short.

The build is excellent as usual.

Pros: fast, strong construction
Cons: heavy, wobbly sunshade

Just recently purchased this, no chance to use in detail. One real surprise here is this did some daylight shots hand-held with 100 ASA film (the analog kind!). The fast speed allows lots of lattitude in depth of field. Somewhat stiff focusing, although I prefer that.
