I danced around for a while when the lens was still around 500, but when I saw one at 400 ending soon, I had to grab it. I haven't regretted it for a minute. The first time I used it, what do you know, a surprise rain shower popped up when I was half a mile down a trail; not a single worry(other than my iphone).
I don't have a ton of experience with other brand dslrs other than store displays, but I've played with a Canon 5d mII with the famed 24-70 lens. I have to say, my 18-135 seems like it snaps to focus quicker and more accurately even in difficult lighting.
Image quality seems fine wide open, but really shines past f8. Field shots tell the tales.
