Bought this off ebay recently. It's very sharp. Wide open and up to f2, it is sharper than my FA 50 1.4 in comparison. The bokeh is also wonderful.

Optically identically to the acclaimed A35/2.8. The difference in review score here may just be a matter of sample variations. I must have a pretty darn good copy of the lens. It's contrasty wide open with excellent sharpness across the frame. Comparable to M50 1.7 in terms of sharpness. It's close to a normal lens, a little bit on the long side, when used on APS-C. Mounted on a film camera, it becomes a wide angle lens. I prefer the FoV it delivers on film more than APS-C. Something to consider if you are also a film shooter. I've not seen this lens on sale often. The M28s are a lot more common in the used market.

Same optics as M28 ver.2 and F 28. Very sharp lens with excellent contrast, no distortions. This lens produce sharper images than my short F2.8 zoom. The short 17-50mm'ish F2.8 zooms also pale in comparison when it comes to contrast. It works well on new DSLRs like K-5 to take advantage of the added dynamic range ability of the new sensors to achieve images rich in color with great details.

It's everything that's been said to be. It has everything that a good portrait lens needs. Fast, silky smooth bokeh, compact, and produces contrasty images as many have already posted above. Focal length is long enough for portraits but not too long. I love the handling of this lens! Like a fast 50, everybody needs a fast 85. It's a shame they aren't as commonly available.

I've had this lens for about a year and a half. I feel it doesn't quite get the recognition that it deserves. This is certainly one of the best 50mm Pentax has ever made. The focal length is a good complement to FA 43, which I also own. At some point I may have to part with one, but for the moment I'm glad to have both in my bag. At wide open aperture, I feel this is sharper and produces better bokeh than FA 50 F1.4. It may be just my personal preference, but I've met many users who told me that they sold their FA 50 1.4 after they acquired this lens. It was certainly a worthwhile upgrade for myself. So far I've not had any autofocus or SDM related issues. I hope this doesn't jinx it, but I felt some of the SDM issues were overly exaggerated. I highly recommend anyone who has a FA 50 to give this a shot to decide for yourself whether it's worth the upgrade.
