SMC Pentax-6x7 55mm F4
supersize

Description:
This wide angle lens for the Pentax 6x7 system lens has a field of view like a 28mm lens in the 24x36mm film format. The optical design was changed over the earlier Takumar versions which also were heavier since they were a half stop faster at f/3.5.

Pros: Insanely sharp, beautifully built, pleasure to use
Cons: easy to accidentally hit the manual/auto aperture button and flip back to f4

I don't give all 10's lightly. This is a fantastic lens. I literally wrote a poem about my love for this lens in my college poetry class. I would go out on a limb and say that from my experience, and it seems the experience of everyone else who's used and reveiwed this lens, this is one of the very sharpest, cleanest manual camera lenses that was ever made. Edge to edge sharp even wide open, and when you stop down to 5.6 or 8, fuggedaboutit. The bokeh is incredibly smooth; I think not much gets said about this len's bokeh because its not super fast and the bokeh doesn't have much character, but if you spend the time to find the right bokehlicious conditions, this has some of the very most smooth, mellow, undistracting and consistent bokeh I've ever seen. just lovely. Its mostly so clinically sharp that there isn't a ton of unique character, but if you spend time with it, you'll begin to notice that there's a bit of a 70's magazine style tint in the way it renders greens, blues and ambers. Certainly nothing to be upset over, each lens has thier own unique aspects which is what makes them fun. I spet $230 on ebay for my copy which is basically in mint condition. I have a Canon 6D Mark ii that I used the lens with, and I attached it with a Fotodiox tilt / shift adapter, and couldn't be happier. Here's my proof:

Pros: Great sharpness, handling
Cons: Can't think of any

This is my sole 55mm lens for my P67s; many say the newer 55mm f/4 67 lens is better, but if it is, it can only be slightly so. This lens is no dog by any stretch and its plenty sharp as far as I can tell. Not overly heavy and smooth focusing. I am completely satisfied with this one and have no incentive to get the newer version based on the performance of the 6x7 f/4.

Pros: very sharp, performed well in tricky lighting
Cons:

I'm sure the latest version '67' is even more sharper, but that would be about... what... around 11 to 14 lpmm more out of 87-91 lpmm or a max of only 16"x 20" instead of 20"x24"? You can't go too wrong with this version and I might someday borrow a 67 to do a head to head test, but I'm happy enough with this version. Other shots I've made with this lens all had good sharpness, edge performance always very good and flare control was always excellent good when a hood was added. So if you are needing a steady performer on the wide side of things... this is a great one to start with or stay with.

Personal cheer for this lens...
I made a full color cover shot with it in my church's special holiday edition bulletin.
The image was very sharp and clear. People thinking digital had thought it was some pro digital camera with lots of megapix and was well cooked in photoshop or something... nope! I've explained that it was straight film and scanned straight with best resolution. The original shot had all the color contrast and the edge sharpness right there and no need to cook it in anything.

Pros: Excellent lens
Cons: None noted

The version II 55mm is to me a great lens. I know there is a following around the version III lens, but this one has suited me just fine.

Pros: Sharpness
Cons: not considered quite as good as the newer 8 element version

It is very easy to confuse this lens with a slightly different 8 element version. Both are very good lenses, but the later 8 element version is considered an absolute classic among some 67 users. Both are f/4 lenses and take a 77mm filter. There is an older f/3.5 version that takes a 100mm filter and is not considered to be in the same class as the two later versions. If I had to choose just one lens for the 67, I'd be satisified with either of the f/4 versions.
