Amazon.com
Boasting such features as super-low-dispersion optical elements, extra-low-dispersion (ED) optical elements, and Pentax original lens coatings, the Pentax DA* 55mm f/1.4 lens delivers crisp high-contrast images even at the edges. The lens is outfitted with a water- and dust-resistant seal for reliable operation in inclement conditions, along with a Pentax Quick-Shift Focus system that allows you to instantly switch between auto and manual focus. The objective lens surface, meanwhile, is treated with Pentax original (Super Protect) SP coating, a special fluorine compound that's applied through a vapor-deposition process to create a surface that effectively repels dust, water, and grease. The combination of special lens coatings, ideal curvature, and superior positioning of optical elements optimizes a host of digital imaging characteristics while effectively minimizing flare and ghosting. Other features include an Aero Bright coating for maximum light transmission, rounded diaphragm blades that create a more circular aperture, a fast f/1.4 aperture for outstanding depth-of-field control, and a 1.48-foot minimum focusing distance. An ideal lens for portraits, still life, or low-light photography, this Pentax 55mm lens carries a one-year warranty.

Focus seems to be quite/very fast and is fairly accurate as far as I can tell - have not had to back or forward adjust it. Very happy about the weather seal - this made the choice of this vs the equivalent Sigma lens an easy one - the last camera body I had died due to an unfortunate water bottle leak in a backpack - much less likely with the K7 and this lens.
Playing around with depth of field to get some really nice shots of the kids - if I can just figure out how to get them to act natural whilst I'm pointing a camera at them!
It was a fair bit of money to spend - but for the quality of shots that I'm now getting - I think it was worth it!
Amazon is good place to buy, accurate and fast with reasonable prices in most cases.
I highly recommend this for anyone wanting to experience the minimalist pleasures of a prime lens. That is, if you're willing to shell out for the SMC DA's amazingly quiet motor and superior build quality as compared with it's less glamorous brother, the 50mm f/1.4. Believe me, after trying both, the SMC DA* is worth the expense, and it capably delivers absolutely gorgeous image quality in the right hands. Five stars all the way, and kudos to Pentax.

I love that the lens hood has a port for accessing filters... this allowed use of a CP-L recently and I did not need to remove the lens hood to make adjustments.
Finally, this lens focuses swiftly when used for video, something the kit lens failed to do (the K-30 video is great, btw, but that is another review).
All in all, I am very happy with the switch and pleased beyond all expectations with this lens.
I bought it mainly for the 1.4 lens opening. I wish the Pentax 18-250 had a 1.4 instead of 3.5 opening.

The DA* 55mm is larger than any of those lenses; it is fatter and uses 58mm filters vs 49-52mm filters. The hood is very large which I'm sure will help with protection and shading from peripheral light but I am a big fan of built in hoods such as on the FA 77mm F1.8 Limited.
The focusing is much improved over the other lenses. It is quiet, and fairly fast. The focus ring does not move unless manually focusing which is found mainly on higher end Pentax lenses.
It is a DA lens so it was meant to operate on APS-C DSLRs. It works reasonably well in FF mode on the K-1, but I would say the extreme corners never get quite as sharp as the true FF 50mm lenses I own. However, the contrast and sharpness are otherwise better than the other fast 50mm lenses I own. In particular at F1.4 the DA* 55mm does not appear as washed out. The aperture is also much rounder.
The AF/MF switch operates like FA* lenses; you can switch it to MF and the camera will operate in MF mode even if the AF/MF switch on the body is set to AF. This is very helpful, but the full time manual focus makes this less of a benefit.
The lens is also all weather.
