For this product I think it has one weakness, and I will explain that first.
My main gripe is with the ball head mount. I think Dolica could improve their product greatly by making it more versatile. Luckily for me I had bought a good ball head mount seperateley last year in anticipation of getting a decent stand. The problem with the one on this tripod is its range of movement is limited to backward and forward using only the release lever. To move it around you also need to loosen the main stem thread. The ball mount I purchased seperately has its ball exposed and also has a forward and backward slot, so you can turn the camera 360 degrees in rotation and up and down or any other angle with the release of only one lever, so if I could change one thing it would be to make the ball mount more versatile. When I get time I will post the supplied mount and the one I replaced it with.
BUT.... having said that, the tripod stand alone is well worth the $40 I paid for it, its very good quality and even if you do add your own ball mount I paid $30 for mine) its still a great rig and you have a spare mount then in case of emergencies.
Things I love about this tripod.
1. It has three sections to the legs, when compacted its much smaller than my old one.
2. The legs when released have great friction, they don;t just fall out like other tripods. When fastened the grips are very solid and the tripod very sturdy.
3. I love the matt black finish, I do a lot of nature photography and its less reflective than my old silver tripod.
4. I like the release buttons for the leg angle, so you can extend the legs out at angles that make the tripod impossible to knock over.
5. Although I am not altogether impressed with the ball mount, it does work perfectly for what it is, With a camera and heavy 300mm lens on it it does not sink in anyway, my old pan style tripod used to sink with the wieght of the lens no matter how hard I tightened it.
6. I like the quick release for the center post, its quick and easy, my old tripod had a winding handle which drove me crazy.
7. The bag is the best tripod bag I have had so far, its strong, padded and has an interior pocket and thick leather like protection on the bottom end.
There is not really anything bad I can say about it, for an amateur photographer on a budget its a big step closer to a pro tripod than most of the other cheap tripods on the market. I used to use a Vista Explorer, and although it was very robust and sturdy, it was cumbersome and I had to make too many moves just to position it for one shot. The ball head mount is the way to go, especially for nature or action photographers.
The ball head I use on this tripod now is the Opteka TH20 Ball Head, which I just saw is currently available for $20 on Amazon, its a far superior head than the one supplied, but the one supplied is very usable for most photographic instances.
Have to give 5 stars, great value and quality.
This tripod is heavier (in a good way) sturdier, more metal parts, and even the plastic parts (clamps, knobs, etc) feel much thicker and harder plastic. Knobs and clamps have textured ridges that make them feel faux-rubbery, and there is some rubber parts (a knob, feet, the release plate). The ball-head is amazing. It rotates so smoothly but solid, and there is a notch in it so you can easily rotate your camera to portrait orientation.
The legs are locked and unlocked using clamps (not rotating rings) and they work great. These clamps are particularly nice for what I do because I have to set up and break down very quickly, especially at Disneyland, and I can unlock all 3 clamps on one leg using one hand, and also lock them again the same way when I condense the legs again.
There is 3 bubble levels on this that help so much. One radial/bullseye bubble on the base of the neck lets you know all your tripod is level (all your legs are set correctly) and then there is 2 bubble levels on the ball head, one to help you level left and right, and one to help you level up and down, should you need that. I don't always need those features but sometimes I do, and it's nice to have them.
Unfortunately, there is no handle for panning (for video) but I have found that I don't really need it. I just use one hand on the knob to pan left and right, granted it's not tightened too much. Not TOTALLY ideal, but works fine.
Overall I think this tripod is good for the money. I am on a budget so I can't afford to throw away money. It feels quality. It's not a high-end tripod but it's much better than a cheap "gets the job done" tripod. Much more solid and stable.
The only issue I had is that this tripod did not come with the counter-weight backpack hook on the bottom of the center column, even though the website shows it including one, and even though the literature that came with the tripod says that it should have one. I contacted them and they let me know that they changed it, and now instead of the hook, a second threaded head is in it's place, so you can fix the ball-head and your camera to the bottom of the center column (for macro photography) without having to remove and invert the entire column... something that I have no use for. This was very disappointing because about half the reason I wanted this tripod was so that I can finally hang my backpack from it during fireworks shows, both to save space and to offer more stability with weight.
That being said, they sent me a hook immediately after contacting them. Their website has contact forms but I called them directly, they answered quickly and after investigating the matter they found that they have hooks that fit the threaded screw, they sent me an email form to fill out and send back (my address, model #, etc) and I received the hook in 2 days. So although I was upset it didn't come with a hook, I have to give credit to their excellent customer service. Easy to get through to. And to be fair, the Amazon listing for the product doesn't say anything about the hook, just the product listing on their website (which does need to be updated).
Very pleased with my purchase!
