Product Description

From the Manufacturer

This exciting new high-speed, high-performance F/2.8 telephoto zoom for full-frame and APS-C format SLRs delivers outstanding imaging performance in a remarkably convenient package plus best close-focusing ability in its class down to 0.95m (37.4") (1:3.1 at 200mm) throughout the range. Its wide aperture permits the use of faster shutter speeds in any light, and the effective use of shallow depth-of-field to achieve dramatic pictorial effects. The ultimate in reach, speed, and performance for dual SLR formats.

SP AF 70-200mm F/2.8 Di Features
While overall dimensions are confined to the absolute minimum, the new SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 zoom lens is packed with features that allow stress-free photography: a versatile MFD of just 37.4" over the entire zoom range; best-in-class maximum macro magnification ratio of 1:3.1 at f=200mm; and an advantageous internal focusing (IF) system. The new tele-zoom lens covers a desirable focal length range of 70mm medium telephoto to 200mm telephoto when mounted on full-size format SLR cameras and a focal length range from 109mm to 310mm* ultra telephoto when mounted on a DSLR camera with an APS-C sized imager.

Digitally Integrated (DI) Lenses for Top Imaging Performance
Di (Digitally Integrated Design) is a Tamron designation that applies to lenses that have been optimized for digital capture using advanced multi-coating techniques and optical designs that assure excellent image quality across the entire picture field. Because of these characteristics, Di lenses provide outstanding performance on cameras with full-frame and APS-C format sensors as well as on 35mm film.

Low Dispersion (LD) Glass for Greater Lens Sharpness
Low dispersion (LD) glass elements in a lens help reduce chromatic aberration; the tendency of light of different colors to come to different points of focus at the image plane. Chromatic aberration reduces the sharpness of an image, but glass with an extremely lowdispersion index, has less of a tendency to separate (defract) a ray of light into a rainbow of colors. This characteristic allows the lens designer to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration at the center of the field (on axis), a particular problem at long focal lengths (the telephoto end of the zoom range), and for lateral chromatic aberration (towards the edges of the field) that often occurs at short focal lengths (the wide-angle end of the zoom range.)

Super Performance (SP) for Discriminating Shooters
Tamron SP (Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamron’s optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parameters—they are all designed to a higher standard with little regard for cost constraints. As a result, Tamron lenses bearing the SP designation feature impressive and innovative designs that have established an enviable reputation for excellence among those knowledgeable photographers that demand the very best.

Internal Focusing (IF) System
Internal focusing provides numerous practical benefits to photographers including a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarizing and graduated filters, and more predictable handling because the lens length does not change during focusing. Even more important, Tamron’s Internal Focusing (IF) system provides a much closer minimum focusing distance (MFD) throughout its entire focusing range. In addition, IF improves optical performance by minimizing illumination loss at the corners of the image field, and helps to suppress other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions.

I really like this lens!
5 Stars
I really like this lens!
I use this lens with a Sony a300 and a700. I think most people who have reviewed this lens has rated it's performance outdoors as good and have been happy with it. I wish to make a few comments about the indoor performance of this lens.I photograph the choral and drama productions of our local high school where my wife is a teacher. Everyone knows that photographing stage productions is a challenge. The poor lighting and a lot of movement leads to many disappointing shots. In the past several years I have settled on using the Panasonic FZ18 and FZ28 super zoom cameras to capture the action ( I love that the FZ28 can zoom while capturing video and I love the range) and have been pretty happy with the results.I purchased this lens due to its value. I have been happy with it's performance outdoors. I was interested in using it during this school year. This last week I photographed the school musical, "Footloose". Oh man, action and dancing and more of the same. One evening I used the FZ18 and was happy with the pictures but discarded about 30 out of 200. Last night I used my a300 and this lens. And the results were better. I shot in "A" mode at f2.8 between 100mm to 200mm from a tripod. In fact, I was impressed with many of the shots. Some of them looked like they were shot in the studio and not from 100' away. Very nice colors and sharp. The images were not softer at 200mm. I discarded 6 out of 300. I was able to capture some of the dancing. Previous to using this lens with a DSLR I had quit trying to capture dancing unless the dancers were posing. Now a comment about the autofocus. Yes, the lens does hunt under these conditions at times. But in every situation it did arrive at the focused image. Most of the time it immediately focused on what I aimed at. I noticed the autofocus hunting happened the most if I was shooting at 200mm and moved to another subject quickly. I did not notice any hunting between 70mm to 150mm. I took 300 shots and it happened about 5 times. I assume the autofocus would have been faster and better with my a700. Next time, I'll try that. But, I used the slower a300 on purpose.Overall, the valve can't be beat and the performance is good. I see no need to buy a Sony 70-200mm G lens. Would it be better? Yes! Can I get good pictures with this lens indoors under difficult conditions? Yes! I will post a few of the shots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Tele Zoom Regardless of Price and ... Great Price
Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2010
This is a really superb telephoto lens: The best one I've ever used. Bright, fast focus, crisp sharpness and contrast, beautifully balanced, small (overall size) in its class, breeze and a joy to use. Focuses down to about 30 inches which gets you about 3:1 and lovely sharp close-ups. Accurate focusing on stop-down (no discernable back/forward focus with changing f-stop). Beautiful, smooth bokeh. Very little chromatic aberration; and it's never prominent or distracting. (I chose this lens over the [[ASIN:B0017UYBXO Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG HSM II Macro Zoom Lens for Pentax Digital SLR Cameras]] due to the prominent bokeh CA in the SIGMA for close focus images, one of the main reasons I bought this lens. Refer to the dpreview reviews of these two lenses for a comparison.)

I've been shooting for over 30 years now, using primes (from 16mm to 400mm in 35mm film work) and zooms, APOs and EDs and ATXs, etc. I like this telephoto better than any other I've ever used. The sharpness corner to corner, no vignetting, beautiful contrast and bokeh, brilliant color, balanced handling, well-engineered package, lens hood, tripod ring, zoom and focus rings size, texture, location, and operation, the complete internal design (internal focus and zoom, no rotation of the front element) are all super. It comes with a nice draw-string padded case/sack that works efficiently in the camera bag. With the APS-C sensor in my camera (K-X, great camera) this lens is the 35mm equivalent of ~105-300mm f/2.8, a superbly useful range for a middle-range tele.

I would put this lens up against any telephoto zoom in this range. The only negatives I can mention are: Size (what do you expect at f/2.8, IF, IZ? but as noted, it is smaller than the others except SIGMA) and the fact that there are no (current, in-production, high quality) teleconverters that are compatible with it (for PENTAX). I have a PENTAX AF 1.7X converter that I bought on eBay: A very nice TC, but very expensive for what it is (the SIGMA APOs are much less).

[Update 22-Dec-2010: I still love this lens and have used it for thousands of shots. However, I recently purchased the PENTAX [[ASIN:B0013545U2 Da 300MM F4 Ed (if) Sdm Lens]] telephoto -- and I like that one even better, which is really saying something. I will continue to use this lens more than the 300 for reasons of versatility. They are about the same size and weight.]

5.0 out of 5 stars Téléobjectif de qualité pour "pas cher"
Reviewed in France on January 16, 2020
Bonjour,

-

Nathan
