Product Description
From the Manufacturer
This exciting new high-speed, high-performance F/2.8 telephoto zoom for full-frame and APS-C format SLRs delivers outstanding imaging performance in a remarkably convenient package plus best close-focusing ability in its class down to 0.95m (37.4") (1:3.1 at 200mm) throughout the range. Its wide aperture permits the use of faster shutter speeds in any light, and the effective use of shallow depth-of-field to achieve dramatic pictorial effects. The ultimate in reach, speed, and performance for dual SLR formats.
SP AF 70-200mm F/2.8 Di Features
While overall dimensions are confined to the absolute minimum, the new SP AF70-200mm F/2.8 zoom lens is packed with features that allow stress-free photography: a versatile MFD of just 37.4" over the entire zoom range; best-in-class maximum macro magnification ratio of 1:3.1 at f=200mm; and an advantageous internal focusing (IF) system. The new tele-zoom lens covers a desirable focal length range of 70mm medium telephoto to 200mm telephoto when mounted on full-size format SLR cameras and a focal length range from 109mm to 310mm* ultra telephoto when mounted on a DSLR camera with an APS-C sized imager.
Digitally Integrated (DI) Lenses for Top Imaging Performance
Di (Digitally Integrated Design) is a Tamron designation that applies to lenses that have been optimized for digital capture using advanced multi-coating techniques and optical designs that assure excellent image quality across the entire picture field. Because of these characteristics, Di lenses provide outstanding performance on cameras with full-frame and APS-C format sensors as well as on 35mm film.
Low Dispersion (LD) Glass for Greater Lens Sharpness
Low dispersion (LD) glass elements in a lens help reduce chromatic aberration; the tendency of light of different colors to come to different points of focus at the image plane. Chromatic aberration reduces the sharpness of an image, but glass with an extremely lowdispersion index, has less of a tendency to separate (defract) a ray of light into a rainbow of colors. This characteristic allows the lens designer to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration at the center of the field (on axis), a particular problem at long focal lengths (the telephoto end of the zoom range), and for lateral chromatic aberration (towards the edges of the field) that often occurs at short focal lengths (the wide-angle end of the zoom range.)
Super Performance (SP) for Discriminating Shooters
Tamron SP (Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamron’s optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parameters—they are all designed to a higher standard with little regard for cost constraints. As a result, Tamron lenses bearing the SP designation feature impressive and innovative designs that have established an enviable reputation for excellence among those knowledgeable photographers that demand the very best.
Internal Focusing (IF) System
Internal focusing provides numerous practical benefits to photographers including a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarizing and graduated filters, and more predictable handling because the lens length does not change during focusing. Even more important, Tamron’s Internal Focusing (IF) system provides a much closer minimum focusing distance (MFD) throughout its entire focusing range. In addition, IF improves optical performance by minimizing illumination loss at the corners of the image field, and helps to suppress other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions.

The Lens itself is a beast! when it comes to built quality. Feels solid and You can knock someone out with it. Not as Solid a Canon 70-200 L lens but solid enough to know that if your buying a lens for its built quality, then you know you got a damm good lens.
Focus Speed - I've read a lot of complaints about focus speed and let me just say that its not fast focus but it is not slow. If you looking to shoot sports you may have trouble trying to focus. It does not necessarily mean that you can't do it but i don't consider this lens appropriate to shoot moving subjects in sports. One of the main reasons is because of its "slow" focus speed when it comes to sports and also because Image Stabilizer does not come with the lens. In General the focus speed of this lens is superb when it comes to shooting static wild life, outdoor scenery, or in my example i used it on my trip to San Francisco and it performed well when it came to focusing on subjects like the famous railway trains that are in the city. It will focus fast enough on people that are walking as well as non moving objects. The focus speed was superb when it came to the city itself. So bottom line on focus speed - If your looking to shoot sports i would not recommend it.. other than that This lens is BIG BANG FOR THE BUCK on focus speed in General.
2.8 - Is lovely when its late hours of the night. It still lets you shoot at a not so high ISO and come out with SHARP! photos.
Quality of Shots - AMAZING BOKEH! Sharp Photos and its performed well above the similar Sigma in my opinion when it came to quality of shots.
Weight - I have to admit this lens is not heavy but for the someone that is not used to carrying big lenses 4 pounds may be heavy to them. But even at 4pounds i was able to shoot nicely without a tripod. the Tripod ring is removable if you don't want to carry it on the lens. Plus if 4 pounds and bringing it up and down will give you a good work out haha.
Let me just say that if you think IS will be a problem, it won't. Lens at fast shutter speeds makes you realize that IS is not something to consider if you do not need it.
In simple terms -
$769 for the lens is a BIG BANG! for what your getting. Sharp, Fast focus on non sports of course, Built quality is excellent! If you don't have those extra $400 for the canon non IS L lens or an extra $1, 800 for the IS version then this is a great alternative. I can honestly say that it blast my expectations and it will do same to yours. If you read negative things about it, don't necessarily think the lens is bad..its more sometimes of having bad luck with a lens. Maybe it wasn't built right, but in general this is a magnificent sharp fast focus (non sports)lens.
I've been shooting for over 30 years now, using primes (from 16mm to 400mm in 35mm film work) and zooms, APOs and EDs and ATXs, etc. I like this telephoto better than any other I've ever used. The sharpness corner to corner, no vignetting, beautiful contrast and bokeh, brilliant color, balanced handling, well-engineered package, lens hood, tripod ring, zoom and focus rings size, texture, location, and operation, the complete internal design (internal focus and zoom, no rotation of the front element) are all super. It comes with a nice draw-string padded case/sack that works efficiently in the camera bag. With the APS-C sensor in my camera (K-X, great camera) this lens is the 35mm equivalent of ~105-300mm f/2.8, a superbly useful range for a middle-range tele.
I would put this lens up against any telephoto zoom in this range. The only negatives I can mention are: Size (what do you expect at f/2.8, IF, IZ? but as noted, it is smaller than the others except SIGMA) and the fact that there are no (current, in-production, high quality) teleconverters that are compatible with it (for PENTAX). I have a PENTAX AF 1.7X converter that I bought on eBay: A very nice TC, but very expensive for what it is (the SIGMA APOs are much less).
[Update 22-Dec-2010: I still love this lens and have used it for thousands of shots. However, I recently purchased the PENTAX Da 300MM F4 Ed (if) Sdm Lens telephoto -- and I like that one even better, which is really saying something. I will continue to use this lens more than the 300 for reasons of versatility. They are about the same size and weight.]

-
Nathan
