I bought this lens about a year ago and then returned it. I wanted a lens for taking good portraits and I was very impressed with portraits from my nifty thrifty fifty (Pentax DA 50mm, f1.8). The Pentax DA 70mm had an even better reputation for portraits and its focal length seemed ideal. However, when I got it, I noticed I had to back off more I wanted to from those I wanted to take head shots of in my apartment. Since, the nifty fifty did such a good job of taking head shots in my modest abode and since the Pentax DA 70mm is reasonably expensive, I returned it.
Forward one year. I realized I needed lens with greater than 50mm focal length when taking people pictures outside of my condo. This lens is great for taking photos of people in grocery stores, in parks, on the street and giving talks. The fine reputation this lens has for sharpness and brokeh is well deserved. Being a Pentax limited prime, it is small, light weight and well built.
If you have need for a lens like this, you will be plenty happy with this lens. Its main competitor is the Pentax FA 77mm (which I have not ever used). This lens has a legendary reputation - it is most likely a tiny bit better optically than the Pentax DA 70mm (both lenses get excellent reviews). However, the FA costs a lot more, and is a little bigger and heavier. I don't think anyone would be unhappy with either lens. I am quite happy with my Pentax 70mm. This time it is a keeper.
Anyone who shoots regularly with prime (single focal length) lenses knows the quality bump you get over most zooms. This is no exception.
It's super sharp wide open and at all apertures in between. In fact I use it wide open at f/2.8 nearly all the time. It's my go to lens when I need to get the shot. Fantastic.
It's so small and light, similar to other Limited lenses in the Pentax lineup. In fact, for years my whole walkaround kit consisted of the Pentax 15mm, 40mm, and 70mm Limited lenses. They are fantastic, and with one lens on the camera and two in a single pouch, I have pretty much any situation covered. HIGHLY recommend them for any Pentax user.
I owned the original (non-HD) version of this lens since 2007. It failed (stopped autofocusing) last year and I *had* to get this. This newer HD version has smoother bokeh, otherwise is exactly the same as the original. Small and lightweight, it's a wonderful little gem of a lens.

Although this is my second longest focal length fixed lens, it is the smallest lens in my entire collection. The metal body and detachable lens hood feel great in hand, and the few test shots that I have performed in low light have great contrast and sharpness. The addition of rounded aperture blades this go around (HD Limited) was a great move by Pentax, as the only complaints I ever saw with the previous version of this lens (SMC Limited) was that bokeh could be a bit busy when stopped down. The rounded aperture blades should definitely help remedy any rough characteristics with bokeh performance.
It looks like Pentax is following the rule of not fixing what isn't broken, as well as listening to the concerns of their loyal customers. Incremental improvements to successful products make for happy buyers.
The bokeh is excellent, much better than any other lens in my bag. This is my first limited lens and it lives up to the hype. Colors and contrast just look different from my other lenses. As with most lenses, I would say this is sharpest from F4-F16. Beyond F16 it softens up again but nothing to complain about. You really only notice it if you look at 100%. This and the Pentax K-3 are a great combo. Would be interesting to compare the pictures to the soon to be here full frame and see if you can really see a difference. I guess I'll never know as the full frame is more than I need.

For head shots,it's not bad but not very good for the rest.If you compare this little lens with the 50* F1.4 or the 85* F1.4,there is a huge difference in favour of the Star lenses. But you have a very compact lens and a very contrasty one too.Because the contrast is so high, you still can do some great photos with this HD DA 70 Limited. You just have to know its limitations.
The rendering is ok,nothing special, nothing troublesome. So,do i recommend this lens?Yes without any hesitation if you don't already have the 77 LTD or the Star lenses around this focal lenght. It's light, very compact, all metal ,quick AF and from 5.6,it's very good optically. If you want or need the utimate, look elsewhere.
