That's where this Rokinon version comes in. It's SUPER FAST with a f/1.4 aperture. You get some insane 'bokeh' in your shots at wide open and portraits look crisp and clear. The quality of the lens is superb. For such a low budget lens, the build quality is durable and looks and feels like a much much higher priced lens.
There are of course, some downsides. Although I appreciate the build quality, the weight of the lens is pretty massive and it tends to weigh me down quite a bit. Now, it's better than carrying around a DSLR AND a heavy lens at the same time, but it looks and feels so clunky on my rather compact NX300.
Weight aside, the lens is MANUAL FOCUS ONLY. I know some people gave it low stars just because of that, but note, if it doesn't say "AUTO FOCUS" then it's a manual lens. Always. "Automated" does not mean "AUTO FOCUS". Just know that for future reference.
But really, the pros and cons are quite a short list. If you're a professional photographer, maybe that list is longer, but I'm sure even pros will absolutely love this lens. One thing is for sure, you HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO SHOOT MANUAL. There's no way around it. If you think this lens does not deliver on quality of images, you are not using it right. Plain and simple. This is coming from an amateur photo enthusiast. I do my homework. And I will say, I've taken some of my best out of camera shots with this lens! I don't really recommended for "portraits" like of family and children, however. It is better for macro photography and close ups. But if you want a super blurred background, this lens delivers on that exceptionally well. I can't compare it to the $900 Samsung equivalent, but for $600 less, I'll say it's a pretty damn good deal.
Don't buy this lens unless you are completely comfortable with manual focus. Manual focus on this lens is not a "caveat" or a "con". It's a manual focus lens. Most photographers and enthusiasts already know that in many cases, manual focus is better for portraiture, which is really where this lens excels. The lens is listed as being manual focus in the description.
On to my review!
Focus is smooth as I had expected. Many people have describe the focus ring as being "well dampened" but for my personal tastes it's just the slightest bit too dampened. I'm sure it will loosen a little with time, however. I bought the non-chipped version, which has [almost] full compatibility with my D300. I do get focus confirmation, which does not always work at f/1.4, but is very close, giving a minimal range in which to get crisp focus. Don't be fooled; this lens is still very usable at 1.4, and renders very soft, flattering light. When overexposed by one stop or less, portraits have a dreamy and bright aesthetic that I've never been able to capture with any of my other lenses.
At f/1.4, the depth of field is very shallow- on the order of a few centimeters. My recommendations are to use a tripod and live-view while focusing, if the situation allows, to get the best focus on a subject's eyes. In some of my handheld shots, the focus ended up about three or four centimeters in front of the eyes. When stopped down to f/2, the depth of field seems to be much wider, and the overall result a little sharper. Some people have stated that this lens' "sweet spot", is at f/4. I personally believe that it's at f/2.8. After buying this lens, I don't plan on shooting with it at an aperture smaller than f/2.8, except for when absolutely required. At this aperture, focusing is much easier, images appear even sharper, and when used correctly, the lens yields some breathtaking images.
The build quality is phenomenal for a lens of this price. As an amateur and a college student, I've used many lower-end Tamron and Sigma lenses. This Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 has a great feel to it- not heavy, but weighted; balanced. It feels significant on my D300, unlike my 50mm or 35mm f/1.8 lenses. It looks very nice- a textured black coating with a beautiful mutli-coated 72mm front element. Mostly of metal and what feels like ABS (very tough) plastic construction. Some reviewers have described how to carefully pry of the "Rokinon" plate to make the lens look more professional. When unboxing this lens, however, I laughed at that- the lens was already smaller than I had expected, and the little dinky Rokinon gold logo plate was neither large or unsightly. Rather, it appears small and very tasteful. And honestly, I don't care if people know it's a third-party lens. I just show them the portraits I've shot with this lens. Why not chalk one up for Rokinon/Samyang?
Some people have also stated that the included lens hood and 72mm front lens cap are "junk". I will say this: the lens cap does not permit the lens hood to be attached over it when reverse-mounted for storage; one must first attach the lens hood, then the cap. This is inconvenient, yes; but it's not a caveat. With a $300 lens, WHAT WERE YOU PEOPLE EXPECTING?! The lens hood, regardless of the reviews I've read, is absolutely fine. It locks securely in place, feels very solid on the lens and looks good. It won't vignette on a crop-sensor like the one I'm using, either.
I recommend a UV mutli-coated filter and a sturdy tripod for use with this lens.

Too front heavy for my X-t20... But sharp lens at f2 onwards. Manual focusing can be wobbly due to higher magfications... Not the lens fault... But just a note.
The focus ring is also exceptionally well made. It has the best focus ring of all the lens I own.
***Now you do have to realize that this lens has to be used in MANUAL MODE only. It will not recognize in Aperture or Auto or Speed priority modes. You have to manually set the ISO and use the aperture ring on the lens to choose your aperture. Is that a problem? NO! But it does take a bit of getting use to.
Once again the lens is so exceedingly sharp and performs so very well in low light that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you buy one. BTW: I use it on an APS-C camera and it works just fine.
I also plan on getting the Rokinon 35mm f1.4 and the 14mm f2.8 at some point.
