Cactus V6 Review

What Is It?

One V6 unit can function as a:

  • radio trigger transmitter (sender)
  • radio trigger receiver
  • optical slave
  • wireless remote trigger for a camera
  • safe-sync hot shoe adapter for high-voltage flashes
  • trigger delay

As a flash trigger, the Cactus V6 can remote control the power level of numerous flash models with 1/3 stop or even 0.1 EV resolution, depending on the flash model.

The V6 is designed to be primarily be used with the left hand, the assumption being that the right hand is holding the camera.

The lever-style locking mechanism and the rotary selection dial contribute to make working with the V6 highly efficient.

Transceiver Design

Each V6 unit is a transceiver, i.e., it can be used as a transmitter or a receiver.

A transceiver design is preferrable over different devices with exclusive sender and receiver roles, because:

  • if a unit in a transmitter role breaks, one can continue shooting by turning a receiver into a replacement transmitter.
  • one can reassign transmitter/receiver roles depending on current needs, e.g., if multiple photographers participate in a shoot.
  • A superfluous receiver can be used as a camera trigger, etc.

Unlike with some Yongnuo triggers, the operation mode is not chosen by the unit automatically but can be selected manually by the user. This is an advantage because it makes the trigger usable off-camera in all modes, e.g., as a remote camera trigger.
