Laowa 100mm F2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO

Introduction

A few years ago, Venus Laowa was an unknown new player in the world of photography. In a short time, the company was able to make a name for itself as a manufacturer of high-quality lenses, often with unique properties. In particular, we had high praise for their full frame 12mm F2.8 low-distortion lens, as well as their 60mm 2x macro.

Laowa offer their lenses under several mounts. One such lens is the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO (sometimes called the Laowa 100mm F2.8 CA-Dreamer Macro 2X). Until recently, that lens was not available for Pentax. Things have changed in November 2020 and this lens is now part of their K-mount line-up.

The reputation of Laowa macro lenses in general, and of this lens in particular, is stellar. In addition to serving as a short telephoto thanks to its 100mm focal length, it offers 2x macro capabilities while maintaining infinity focus. While it is a manual focus lens, Pentax users have the chance to benefit from auto aperture thanks to the mechanical coupling.

This lens created a lot of excitement on our forums. Can it live up to the hype? Read on to find out!
