Pentax-DA 1.4x AW AF Rear Converter

Construction and Handling

The HD Pentax-DA 1.4x AW AF Rear Converter is solidly made. The lens mounts and moving parts are made of metal whereas the barrel is made of polycarbonate. At 126g it weighs 25% more than the comparable Tamron teleconverter.

The only moving parts are the drive shaft for the screw drive autofocus and the stop-down lever. We have often seen quite flimsy stop-down levers, but that's not the case here. The stop down lever plays a major role in maintaining exposure accuracy so it is important that it is sturdy and free of play.

Like other Pentax DA lenses, the teleconverter is assembled in Vietnam.

Around the lens mount you will see a red rubber gasket, which is a key component of the teleconverter's weather sealing.  Note that a weather-sealed lens must also be mounted on the front of the teleconverter to keep moisture out.  Weather-sealed lenses include the entire premium DA* lens series as well as lenses with the WR/AW designation.

The lens release lever is large and easy to operate, though it is shaped slightly differently than the one on the camera.

Verdict

The bottom line is that this converter is well made, nicely finished and easy to handle.
