Pentax FluCard O-FC1 Review

Introduction

The Pentax O-FC1 FluCard is a 16Gb SDHC memory card with a built-in Wi-Fi antenna and Pentax-specific remote control software.  When inserted into a compatible Pentax DSLR, such as the K-3, the FluCard enables wireless tethering and instant image review, referred to as "Remote Capture" by Pentax.  In addition, the card can be used for wireless file browsing and transfers when inserted into any camera, computer, or other device.  For traditional photo storage, the FluCard functions just like any other SDHC memory card, of course.

In this review, we will be taking a close look of the tethering capabilities offered by this card.  We will also present a step-by-step guide on how to use the card, and we will  analyze its performance and operation in detail.  One of the unique features of this card is that the tethering feature can be accessed by almost any device that supports Wi-Fi, as it does not require a native app to run.  This means that you'll be able to control your camera using your smartphone, tablet, PC, or even a smart TV.

As of March 2014, the FluCard is available for purchase worldwide.  In the US, it retails for $99.  According our interview with Pentax at CP+ 2014, the card will be compatible not only with the K-3 but also all future DSLR models, which is welcome news following the six-year gap without official tethering support for the Pentax DSLR lineup (2008-2014).  The FluCard also represents a big technological leap for Pentax and we are excited to see that Wi-Fi capabilities have finally been made available to Pentax camera users.  Read on to find out all about this card!
