Think Tank Signature 13 Review

Conclusion

The Signature line is Think Tank’s response to the new trend of making premium (and expensive) messenger bags with improved aesthetics and modern materials.

Think Tank obviously worked hard to create a good-looking bag. We believe they succeeded. Instead of copying what others have done, they have created a messenger bag with its own style. It doesn't look like anyone's copycat.

The craftsmanship is stellar, as good as can and should be expected at this price point. The choice of materials is well adapted to the bag's purpose and inspires confidence on its durability.

In use, the Signature 13 impressed us with its high level of comfort. The strap in particular should serve as a reference: it is able to distribute weight impressively well, without stretching unduly. We could wish it was faster to adjust, but it's not worse than some competitors.

The bag is roomy without being overly large. Organization is easy and it is possible to cram a lot of items inside the bag. The dividers are not meant to be reorganized on the fly. We can understand why Think Tank went this way, although there is something to be said for flexibility also.

The front compartment is also particularly well done, capable of serving more purposes than the usual. It is certainly more than an afterthought.

The only thing we would have liked to see improve regards external storage: there isn't any. There is no place for a tripod, no external pockets except for the tablet sleeve, no simple way to attach an accessory to the sides. This creates a streamlined, pure design but compromises flexibility.

In summary, testing the Signature messenger bag was a pleasure. Its rare flaws are completely overwhelmed by its many qualities. Even the name is well chosen : this back truly has its own signature.

Pros

  • Beautiful, timeless design
  • Superb craftsmanship and choice of material
  • Weather resistant, includes rain cover
  • Roomy without being overly large
  • Large number of dividers, numerous possible configurations
  • Shoulder strap is particularly comfortable
  • Front compartment can serve many purposes
  • Two tablet compartments and luggage sleeve

Cons

  • Not designed for particularly fast access
  • No external storage, no designated place for a tripod
  • Dividers positioning more or less static (even for the two bending ones)
  • Dividers cannot be attached to each other, limiting possible configurations

Who is it for

The Signature 13 should be on the list of any photographers interested in a good bag that's also good-looking. Anyone subject to shooting in formal settings will be well served by this bag. Travelers will also enjoy its many qualities. Photographers who carry an armada of small primes will enjoy the Signature's capabilities in this regard.

On the other hand, users who travel rough might worry about the risks of damaging the leather finish.

The Signature 13 costs a hefty $279.75 and the Signature 10 will set you back $249.75. As such, this messenger bag is not for everyone. Photographers who can afford either one will find that, as in most thing, you usually get what you pay for.
