Topaz ReMask 5 Review

Additional Examples

This second example features my daughter Eva. I used ReMask to get rid of the messy background and prepare another composite.

ReMask and HDR

ReMask is great for fine-tuning high dynamic range photography. Sometimes you need pixel level and tonal shift accuracy to getting the results you want. The one below illustrates a photo I took of an over-grown cemetry in Budapest.

My initial image was OK. But it had blown highlights and the haunting memorial sculpture deserved emphasizing.

originalOK as a record shot. Can we do more?

I made two TIFF versions of the initial image. One was used for the background and set at about two stops under-exposure. The other was to the foreground to feature the sculpture which I brought up by a stop, added contrast to make it easier to trace and cut. I also warmed the temperature of the background to replace the blown highlights and merged the two in ReMask.

The final result was close to what I was trying to achieve. The tonal shade of the leaves needed work still, though. More experience with ReMask would produce even better results.
