Rokinon 8mm vs. 10mm vs. Sigma 8-16mm vs. Pentax 10-17mm Ultra-wide Showdown

Rokinon 10mm Rating

The final lens rating, the Samyang 10mm prime's admirable performance is summed up below.

Pros

+ Well built with tight tolerances
+ Focusing ring is nicely dampened
+ Widest rectilinear prime available in K mount

+ Highly resistant to flare
+ Fast aperture of F2.8
+ Vignetting rendered negligible after 1/2 stop
+ Minimal chromatic aberrations throughout range

+ Excellent color rendering and "punchy" contrast
+ Unobtrusive distortion that is easily correctable
+ High center sharpness, especially from F5.6
+ Responsive "click" aperture ring with A position for aperture automation and control via camera
+ F2.8 allows shallow depth of field with smooth and attractive bokeh at minimum focus distance

Cons

- Lacks weather sealing or front filter threads
- Manual focus only
- Large and will make lighter cameras front heavy
- Lack of continuity between "sister brands" can cause confusion between models
- Some concerns of quality control, namely focusing ring calibration

Bottom Line

The Samyang 10mm is not a jack of all trades, but what it does do, it does exceptionally well. It shines when you really need those few extra degrees compared to other ultra-wide lenses (with the exception of the Sigma 8-16mm). This lens is for serious photographers who want that extra bit of sharpness and aperture stops that a zoom can't deliver.  We'll mention once again that it performs exceptionally in the corners and edges, and this is complemented by minimal chromatic aberrations.  Thus, we highly recommend it for those premium quality ultra-wide shots that longer focal lengths just can't capture in one go!
