Description:
a limited-edition run of 800 lenses in M42 and an additional 800 in Nikon F-mount, from 2003

manufactured by Cosina - the optics in this lens were used in the upcoming Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f1.4

a bit of history on this lens:

QuoteQuote:
December 2003: Ok folks, some things are stranger than fiction. Mr. Kobayashi likes his Topcon Super D of 1963 enough to style Voigtlander's new silver Bessaflex after it, even producing a Topcon style 58/1.4 complete with the Topcon engraving. Mr. Kobayashi received the blessings of Tokyo Optical, which is still in business manufacturing medical equipment. This lens developed a legendary status in Japan.

The new Voigtlander 58/1.4 Topcor is a new optical design and styled after the classic 58/1.4 Topcor, even down to the Topcor's bayonet on lens hood. These are limited edition lenses, with 800 each announced to be produced in Pentax 42mm screw mount and Nikon AI mount. The lens barrel is out of place in today's plastic lens world, with real classic style chrome, looking just like it came off Topcon's production line in the 1960's. The lens barrel is beautifully made, and rather amazing in the "find any way to make it cheaper" manufacturing times. Side by side the new Topcor is a bit smaller than the original, so the hoods will not interchange. Specs: 7 elements in 6 groups, multi-coated, f/1.4 to f/16, 9 aperture leaves, 58mm filter size, close focus to .45 meter or 1:5.8, weight 305 grams (Nikon).
Mount Type: M42 Screwmount

I could just copy & paste my review from the December 2019 Challenge here, since this lens is essentially the precursor to the Voigtlander Nokton 58/1.4....

I bought this lens after several months of lust - I knew going in that it was a limited edition, collector's lens that I already had familiarity with (but not in M42 mount!)

this lens pretty much does it all for a manual-focus prime that is probably meant to be more of a collector's item than banging around on someone's farm...

the coatings are just a bit different than the Voigtlander's but that is the only difference I found this month - occasional CA that presents as purple fringing in high contrast shots...

it is sharp, it has amazing contrast, gorgeous bokeh, superior clarity, wondrous color rendition.... the build quality is exquisite; from the metal hood, to the engraved/painted markings, everything is meant to convey quality here...

about the only downside I can truly think of is the price, especially when the Nokton is available...

enough about the lens ... the shots:

and the rest of my shots with this amazing lens:

based on the above, I can recommend the lens - if you don't already have the VL Nokton....
