Admittedly initially dismissive of this lens as being 'plastic fantastic', so it sat mostly unused for a while. But with a view to lightening my load after recently resuming overseas travel. Gave it go and have been impressed with its performance. Noticed it's sibling the ubiquitous Sigma 28-80mm f3.5-5.8 Aspherical Macro II is relatively well reviewed within this database. So I have acquired that too and have been giving both a comparative shoot out. Aesthetically the resulting images have been similar except this lens has the additional telephoto reach. Giving it an edge in versatility.
A major appeal to me of this lens is the 'macro' up to 1:2 images. Which when a suitable botanical object bathed in early morning/late afternoon light presents can produce rather pleasing images. Typically I shoot wide open and favour a very narrow depth of field, So the near central part of the image is relatively sharp and the surrounding blur or bokeh suffuces the remainder of the image. Colour rendition to my eye is generally warm and saturated although stray blue bokeh artefacts can add dynamically to the overall colour spectrum.
For the price these can acquired no real quibbles. Except after using other earlier vintage manual lenses and usually finding the focus turn well tampered. Initially the 'light' torque on the auto focus Sigma with minimal focus throw took some adjustment, but with some practice now quite comfortable manually focusing the lens.
