Latest Review Posted | Tokina AT-X 80-400mm F4.5-5.6 I can't believe how good this lens is. Based on other reviews I expected it to be extremely soft at 400mm. I stopped my lens down (Version 1 without the tripod foot) and have been VERY happy. The lens is quite sharp. Autofocus is fine generally provided there is enough contrast, but when it locks in , it locks in fast. It may hunt a bit in low contrast situations and the only other issue is the torque when it focuses, which is pretty significant.
I got this lens as a companion for my 150-450. No dobut that is a better lens. That said, this lens is SO much smaller. It fits in my Lowepro bag designed for a fast 80-200 AND I can put in my 100 f2.8 macro plus flash and another small lens. So it is an absolutely fantastic travel lens.
I had to purchase it through an on-line Japan auction as the lens is pretty rare in the US. There is a tripod and non-tripod version, this is the former. I tought about getting the tripod version, but since my intention was to minimize size I went with the version 1 and I am happy with it.
