I don't have the experience with the Pentax DA* 300/4 to be able to compare at f/4, but the f/2.8 capability does bring with it more light gathering ability where it matters: fast-moving action, and low-light situations. Granted, this is a very basic review not actually testing the lens under these tougher conditions, but this is to provide some practical insights into the lens's features and performance.
Firstly, how it looks. It is solid, robust and yet compact and light compared to the FA* 300/2.8 - more than 500g lighter. Still constructed with longevity in mind - steel everywhere apart from small bits of rubber on the focus ring and removable hood.

Taking the hood off is easy - just unscrew both small metallic screws at each end of the hood and the hood falls off, yet when screwed on, it is solidly attached with no play.

There is a sliding lock for the aperture ring, which is quite different to other lenses, but is just another one of its quirks:

Here you can also see the sliding metal hood that covers the focus ring in the middle of the lens.

Without the hood, the lens is rather compact, but transporting the lens is much easier with the hood on, as it has it... | |
