That reviewer was correct in speculating that there is a Soligor version.

I'll preface my comments by pointing out that I also own the Vivitar 28-200mm f/3.8-5.3 version which I like very much. I really can't tell any major overall differences between the Vivitar and Soligor versions beyond the f/5.3 vs. f/5.5 values, other than the 'zoom numbers' on the Vivitar are along the side of the inner zoom barrel while they're closer to the top center 'focus line' for the Soligor, which seems to me to be the more appropriate location than the Vivitar.
I suppose the multi-coating formulas could be different between the brand variations also? Vivitar had their own in-house lab testing facility for their lenses, so their could also potentially be looser build-to-specification deviations between individual lenses for non-Vivitar brands with lesser testing capabilities? :)
This is a very solid built early 80's lens design that's mostly metal, making it more heavy & bulky than the newer plasticky lenses as far as handling goes. It has a firmly smooth, but short focus throw of about 30 degrees which requires manual focusing more slowly/cautiously since it's easier to rotate past the desired 'in-focus setting' than for lenses with a longer throw.
