Latest Review Posted | Sigma UC 24-70mm F3.5-5.6 Yesterday I got the Sigma 3.5-5.6/24-70 UC.
I don't expect too much from it. In German photographic blogs the non-UC version was rated a bit worse than the first version of the Pentax 18-55 kit. But then this was said to be good enough (resolution wise) for up to 10MP sensors, and better than the kit lenses of many of the competitors.
As any zoom lens is a bag of compromises, the UC (= Ultra Compact) will mean more compromises, compared with the same Sigma lens without the "UC".
So I thought it may just be good enough for my *istDS with its 6MP.
I may add a review at a later time.
The reason why I am posting this now, is the following:
I must warn you to be very careful in using any 3rd party lens cap or lens hood.
At the shortest outside length of the lens (which many people may prefer for travelling when the camera is in its bag) the 55mm filter thread is moving about 2mm inside the barrel. This happens at about 48mm focal length and distance setting to infinity. My lens was missing the original lens hood (which is fixed on an outside bayonet), and offered a 3rd party lens cap where the 2 grips to detach it made it too wide to fit inside the barrel. With manual focusing as well as with AF it is possible to reach the 48mm/infinite position, but this wil put high stress on the bearings of the lens elements inside. I am sure it can lead to decalibration, and to early failure of the AF mechanism of the lens, and probably even of the camera.
