This lens is a keeper. I've wanted one for over 10 years but I didn't want to pay over $2,000 for it. I actually got it for less than $1500.00 because I suspect other buyers were concerned about lens fungus. The person who sold it to me wasn't a photographer at all and a photo revealed specs on the front lens element. I think that scared the other buyers off. I was lucky that it was just large dust particles that fell off the soft lens cover.

Testing this lens revealed a possible problem with the autofdcus at F/2.8. I suspect Pentax cameras may back focus with this lens at F/2.8. The original K-5 gave similar back focus effect in low light with other lenses. I placed my combo on a tripod and it revealed a pretty good alignment where I didn't seem to need to adjust anything with autofocus fine tune. So I decided to test my theory and back in the field I tried it with manual focus and it was still slightly soft at F/2.8 but I had a better result. It sharpens up nicely at F/3.2 and at F/4 it's very sharp and I would rate it a 10 at F/4. I would rate sharpness at least a 9.5.

I have a Sigma 500mm F/4.5. The autofocus of the 300 is a bit faster than the 500. I didn't see any chromatic abberations when I closely examined my photos. I wish I could buy a TS-41 lens handle for this but Sigma doesn't make them anymore. It would make it easier to carry in the field.
