Wide open this lens is so soft it can hardly be used except for shooting portraits in subdued light if you are after a soft effect. What is to be expected of a lens that has a F3.3 aperture and 62mm front element (Most F3.5 lenses are 67mm) Softness doesn't entirely go away at 5.6 (no stop between, but you can use the aperture between stops). At F8 it is acceptable, but sharpness is nothing to write home about. Close focussing distance is three meters which is quite long. because of it's softness and low contrast it is quite hard to focus accurately, even in live view. Stopping down will clear it up a bit but also darken the viewfinder. I haven't noticed overly irritating fringing in the lens. Edit: I found out the front element was screwed out quite far causing some crazy coma so I did a reshoot an revaluation. Sharpness and Handling (focussing became easier) and Value earned an extra point also raising the overal score to 7. It is still not supersharp and quite soft wide open, so no 8. Overall if you want a more compact 200mm lens you are better of getting and F4 (Like the Pentax-m 200mm F4). Sample at three stops (notice the strange wideness difference in the bottle?
