This thread on stopping light leaks with narrow profile M42 lenses that don't cover the camera mount may be useful.

For those of you unfamiliar with the preset aperture mechanisms, "Mr Pentacon Six" has made these Utube videos: method 1; method 2.

Pros: Sharp, build, bokeh (15 blades), pre-set, 350° throw ...
Cons: Not "sharp" wide open, min focal distance, huge throw ...
Sharpness: 8    Aberrations: 7    Bokeh: 9    Handling: 8    Value: 8

Bonjour,

I just acquired a copy of this lens from a PF member in France and quite happy thus far ... only tested today indoors with (and without) K-5 flash due to dull, rainy weather outside. Just wanted to post something ASAP ...

Great sharpness for some "long distance" portrait shots of my daughters ... I "need" this distance because they hate a camera in their face plus this far distance allows for more candid shooting ... even with the on-board flash. Other subjects OK, but I need to learn what this lens can do, especially outside in real world conditions and brighter indoor environments.

Below are additional images of this Pentacon ...

Allez et salut, John le Frog

Pros: Cheap, IQ, Aperture blades.
Cons: MF, min focus distance.
Sharpness: 8    Aberrations: 7    Bokeh: 9    Handling: 8    Value: 9

Overall a pretty good buy if you are looking for a cheap but relatively good 200mm lens. MF is easy to use although abit annoying since the longer focal lengths are used more for things that are jitterish and like to move quickly, but good skill development
Fair bit of CA at f/4 but that quickly disappears stopped down, and the aperture blades make some nice bokeh around the f/8 mark. Best bit is this lens can be found pretty cheap!

Cons: handling, not sharp enough in wide open
Sharpness: 9    Aberrations: 8    Bokeh: 10    Handling: 7    Value: 8    Camera Used: K5, MX, ME Super, MV

i got on ebay for 15 blades version, with coating loss of rear elemen, but it's still okay for APSC digital to capture image
everybody know the meyer optik typical...fully bokehliceous!!
not fast lens actually especially in focusing and metering, I've had difficulty in communicating through the green button on my K5

here are the sample images:

Pros: Low cost, sharp at F8
Cons: Slightly soft & ca at F4
Sharpness: 8    Aberrations: 7    Bokeh: 9    Handling: 9    Value: 10    Camera Used: Fuji X-M1, Olympus E-PL5

Pentacon 200mm f/4.0 (former Meyer-Optik Orestegor 4/200) old M42 lens for ~40$. This is the older version with 15 aperture blades, do not get the newer (inferior) 6 blade version.

There is some softness & ca at F4 but it becomes quite nice at F8.

Pros: Very good imaging
Cons: Nothing much except its age
Sharpness: 8    Aberrations: 8    Bokeh: 10    Handling: 10    Value: 10    Camera Used: Digital full frame and film

Exactly the same as the Meyer Optik Gorlitz 200mm "zebra" lens but with slightly better ability to reach infinity. Because it doesn't have the cosmetic shiny "zebra" bits on the lens barrel people who like to triple their money paid for such superficial bling tend to avoid this all-black Pentacon; but it's exactly the same lens when you buy the front aperture "preset" version in the picture. More than this fact is that the Pentacon actually has slightly better infinity ability and a slightly better lens coating. The coating is deeper blue/purple and does help reduce flare a little.

As with most telephoto lenses of its time the lowest aperture is going to have some fringing aberration when attempting some infinity and long distance shots. But from f5.6 to f11 this is a great lens. Above f11 and things trail off a little, as with all lenses of the time.

Problems? It's old so don't fool yourself it will be like new. Coatings may carry fade marks, cleaning marks and some markings caused by poor storage and dampness. It is an easy lens to open up and clean out, though. Check it out before you buy.
