I got this lens after I asked in this forum about it. I had heard nothing about this lens. My copy has an additional legend in the front ring: RL Series. I have no clue about what that means. I really like the Vivitars by Komine (series 28xxxxx) close focus (28mm f2 and 28mm f2.8). They are true gems. I thought this lens could be at the same level of those two and was interested. First, it is a close focus lens (min focussing distance is 30 cm, or 12 inches). The lens has good colors and behaves really nice. Wide open in a bright day outdoors, it could be "dreamy" and show spherical aberration. However, if you use it properly (with a CPL filter) or in the shadow and at close distance, this dreamy look created could be an asset. Stopped down, it is a fine lens. I reviewed this lens and compared it to one of the oldies (best Nikkor ever!) and a Leica FF camera. So, I am copying this review here for your benefit. I am keeping this lens. I think it is a good lens. ------------------------------------- Thanks everyone for their comments. I already got the lens, it is mint and clean. So, there is no faulty characteristics that can make this lens behave erratically. So, let's see what I got. I took it for a ride around the house on my K3 (I will get the effect of a 36mm lens). I also took my Leica M (FF) with my stellar lens from the 1950s, the W-Nikkor-C 35mm f1.8 ltm to compare. I shot five subjects wide open (F2 for Vivitar, and F1.8 for Nikkor) and at f5.6. I will upload the results later on. However, here are my observations: The Vivitar 24/2 PKA is a close focus (30 cm, or 12" min.) with nice bookeh and relatively good resolution wide open. It is "Dreamy" ( low contrast and spherical aberrations) wide open, which could not be bad if you want some special effects with close subjects. Stopped down is just a regular very good lens. The Leica M9 and the Nikkor is one of the best combos and produces real nice shots. You will be the judge. I believe the level of quality of the Vivitar is good, but it does not match the Leica/Nikkor set. Please see for yourself and provide your input on this thread. If you have any advice, please go ahead and share. One of the things I am experimenting now is the use of a larger hood, and CPL filter to eliminate some of the stray light, especially during sunny days. I have the Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 58/2 10-blade sliver version. Pretty much the only one you can get in relative good shape. My copy is preset and for some reason it stops down to f5.6 only. I do not want to mess with it. I use it mostly wide open. The glass has bubbles and dust, but it does not affect the shots. I find this lens nice, even though, I can get some better bokehs with the Helios 44-3, and the Meyer Optics Primoplan 58/1.9. However, there is something to it that makes you want it. My copy came with a label ring on top of the original label (of which the serial number and Jena had been scratched down - still readable) that just said Zeiss Jena 58/2 and there is a symbol. it is very weird. Some people say that the original German lenses were defaced and the Russians put their own label to make it look like they have made the lens. If that is the case, I am lucky I got a German made, not a Russian made. In any case, here are some shots taken with this wonderful lens. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1506/25302167416_336f237181_b.jpgCZeissJenaBiotar58mmf2-K3-UnaMandarina1 by Palenquero Photography, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1719/24941829469_9235b4969f_b.jpgWide Open by Palenquero Photography, on Flickr https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1662/24697768174_e212031b56_b.jpgCZeissJenaBiotar58mmf2-K3-PeachBloss by Palenquero Photography, on Flickr For comparison, I have included a shot taken with the Helios 44-3: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1445/25013846580_23b16c9d5a_b.jpgPeach Blossom by Palenquero Photography, on Flickr

Jan. 15, 2015 Update: I got this same lens in PKA, so I will be posting photos of it. I will also describe the difference it makes not having to use the green button for stopping down. ------------------------------------ I have had this lens for more than three years. This is a great lens, I bought it when I could not find the Pentax K28/2.8. Finally, i found the Pentax K, but after few months, I sold it and kept this nice lens. Not because it is shaper than the Pentax K28/2, but because I like the result better. I also have it in the M42 mount under Vivitar. I will be posting photos soon. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2855/12262160953_3bbe0f5ab0_b.jpgKiron28mmf2-AfternonLight1-1 by Palenquero, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7422/12101450393_68649cceab_b.jpgHall by Palenquero, on Flickr https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5522/12101557554_7158cb7fdf_b.jpgThe View by Palenquero, on Flickr https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2855/12101178965_5273339352_b.jpgPupuseria by Palenquero, on Flickr https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5495/12101840816_27721cf0fa_b.jpgMercado by Palenquero, on Flickr These samples was taken with the Vivitar version: https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3769/12231257714_7d3e18c786_b.jpgCoconut Oil by Palenquero, on Flickr https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3761/12239383724_4748531647_b.jpgThe flower and the bee by Palenquero, on Flickr https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2835/12239155553_6653bf72d2_b.jpgThe white flower by Palenquero, on Flickr https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5484/12231260254_d46e9358c3_b.jpgMarkers by Palenquero, on Flickr https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7300/12231026463_436bf355b8_b.jpgCanada Dry by Palenquero, on Flickr Some more recent photos: WIDE OPEN f2: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7572/15671316213_06086695a5_b.jpgWatercolorist1-1 by Palenquero, on Flickr f4 https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8644/16291187865_1e760356ec_b.jpgFriendly Information by Palenquero, on Flickr WIDE OPEN f2 https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8576/15671316913_23c91c6b8d_b.jpgOtra Muerte by Palenquero, on Flickr

This is probably the sharpest and nicer 135mm lens (pardon me, SMC Takumar 135/2.5 Second Version and Pentax K 125/2.5, I am embellishing little here, but not too much), just a tad slower than the SMC Tak and Pentax. I will post some photos later. Here is one quick shot: https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8654/16144875476_2a27a74c69_h.jpgCarlZeiss MC DDR 135mmf3.5 @f3.5 - Chair by Palenquero, on Flickr

I have two collections of Sears lenses. One, the common one with color letters and Ricoh pins, and the other that looks just like the Takumars. This lens in part of the one that looks like the Takumar. The other one is macro and has the A, and is soft wide open at macro. This one has an M42 mount. I will post photos later. I just took it for a ride today after years of being sitting on my shelf. I do not remember how much I paid for it, but a bit more than expected because I collect them, and it is in great shape. Here is one shot taken with the Sears Auto 135/2.8 wide open. To show how good the lens is, I also posted the same shot taken with the Carl Zeiss DDR 135mm f3.5 (the sharpest 135 mm lens). I bought this lens and used it on a canon 5DII. I had to purchase an adapter for $30 on eBay. This lens is wonderful. I also bought an adapter for K mount. However, it requires removing some screws from th emount to screw the Pentax. You save the screws and can reverse the opertion if you ever want to go back to R mount. I have not done it. I used it on Canon 5DD because it is FF. This lens is a treat. For those that never used Leica lens, it is a good way to buy a Leica cheaper and adapt it.

Too bad things first: Hood attaches itself so hard that it is difficult to remove, and a little noise in the AF. Other than that, this is the perfect lens for almost every occasion. For extra wide angle, you have to get another lens. I do recommend it. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8362/8344918972_f2e0f04fef_c.jpg Tamron33-2.8-Test1-1 by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8503/8347030956_2a48b1a063_c.jpg Tamron28-75-2.8-Mandarines3-1 by Palenquero, on Flickr

I got this lens and used it on a K7 first. It was good, but the low ISO of the K7 did not allow for killer shutter speeds or fast AF. However, once on the K5, this lens became the A+ that it is. This is my carry at all times lens. I had to buy a lens crib from Adorama to carry at all times. I do recommend this lens. It is worth. This review is for the Komine (version 3). I also have the Kiron (ver.1) and I love it. The quality is great although is heavier. This lens is excellent because of the range and relatively fast at f2.8 at 70mm and 4 at f210. I also have the Tamron SP Adaptall 70-210 f3.5, the rival of this lens. Some people says that the Tamron beat the Komine. But after having used it, I give them a tie. I have the Kiron (ver. 1) and the Komine (ver. 3), both lenses are very good and I recommend them. The Komine is easier to use because of the PkA. The Kiron is probably a better lens, but it is heavier, and to use the macro, you have to push a button and rotate it. The Kiron requires stopping down with the green button (or with the on/off switch on the K5). It is easier to use on the K5 because of that. I paid four times what I paid for the Kiron to get the Komine. Here are couple of photos: These ones were taken with the Kiron, my first shot with it. I bought this lens to complete my Adapt-a-Matic collection. Initially, I was not happy with the sharpness wide open. However, when stopped down to 8-11, it is just what you need. At f16, it is good and I have not noticed a negative effect. It has a beautiful big (82mm) front lens. This lens looks just too beautiful on the K5. I get some nice shots. However, I use it mostly for architecture and landscapes on a tripod, and it is just phenomenal. I will be posting some photos lately. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8162/7120405011_bfcf251a6d_b.jpg Adaptamatic21-4.5-Grapevine-1 by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7225/6974324340_7154295ae5_b.jpg Adaptamatic21-4.5-AbstractShoppingCarts-1 by Palenquero, on Flickr

After I completed my Takumar collection, I decided to start collecting some of the best lenses such as Adapt-a-Matic. The best of the bunch is 105/2.8, then the 28/2.8, and the 135/2.8, all of them with a great color rendering, and a great image quality. This is a great lens, I recommend it.

I am reviewing the lens shown here, the adapt-a-matic. I also have the BBAR MC Adaptall version build later on. The adaptamatic are the last Tamron lenses made by hand without computers. Their collectable value is great. Not all adpatamatic are great, some of the primes are, this is one of them. Lucky you find one. This lens is a bit heavy, but it gives you confidence once you have it in your hand. I am glad I have this lens. I recommend. I have two copies of the Auto Chinon 135/2.8 lens, apparently made by Tomioka. Yes, my two copies do not look completely like the photo above. The focus grip is made by a rather week crocodile leatherlike plastic that shrinks often (I have the same on my Auto Chinon Tomioka 55/1.4 with the Tomioka label in the front filter ring). The curious thing is that the first one I got had a legend MADE IN KOREA, which told me that I may not have been made by Tomioka. Then I got another exact copy on Ebay with the legend MADE IN JAPAN. Both are exactly the same in quality and sharpness. Below are some pics taken with boths. This lens is as good as the Carl Zeiss Jena Sonar 135/35. No bad shots. ------------------- These are from the Japanese version copy: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7208/6804891880_36c5b63f3c.jpg Auto Chinon 135/2.8 Japon Version by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7195/6804891788_118570dc7b.jpg Auto Chinon 135/2.8 Japon Version by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7047/6947548439_71103a6afb.jpg AutoChinonTOmioka135mmf2.8vJapan@f4-Candle-1 by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7038/6947548383_35a9b84f10.jpg AutoChinonTOmioka135mmf2.8vJapan@f2.5-Candle-1 by Palenquero, on Flickr ==================== These are from the Korean version copy: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7066/6873351797_1e697978d0.jpg Sailing Ship at the Dana Harbour by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7058/6850333601_96b5ed6432.jpg AutoChinon135mmf2.8-Arabesco-1 by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7180/6804891946_e0b6cd8b4b.jpg Auto Chinon 135/2.8 Korea Version by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7065/6804891914_d070db891c.jpg Auto Chinon 135/2.8 Korea Version by Palenquero, on Flickr

I just got the two copies of this lens, one with the EBC (coating) and the other one without it. I will post pictures later. I have not used the lens because they have a key or protuberance below the aperture ring that someone recommended to remove with a Dremmel. Otherwise, it could not make proper contact or focusing. I just wanted to reserve the honor of being the first reviewer of this lens. I will start with 10/10 and once I try it, we will go from there.

I am reviewing the Sears auto lens shown in the photo above. Since I got this lens, I got rid of my Pentax M 50 f1.4, and some of the Taks in the same range. This lens is unbelievable sharp, heavy and easy to use. Full open is great for portraits, it has very narrow depth of field, therefore, the perceived softness. I was so impressed with the image I shot the first time. I bought it attached to an old Sears camera that works just fine too on film. I do not know who made the lens, but I love it. The are going up soon. I will be posting some shots taken with this lens in few days. The auto-manual switch is just fine, so I think it could be a different version from the above reviewed lens. -------- Update: I also have the Auto Chinon Tomioka 55/1.4 (with the Tomioka name in the filter ring) and this Auto Sears lens is pretty much the same. They have different grips, but the size, weight and sharpness is the same. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7170/6702221289_ab9b74735c_b.jpg SearsAuto55mmf1.4@f-8-LACivicCenter-2040 by Palenquero, on Flickr

I bought this lens and got it stuck on my Pentax Kx, the Ricoh pin was the culprit. After I removed the pin, I put it on the camera again and discovered the beauty of this lens. I do recommend it. I bought it mainly because of the glowing halo when used in macro, it is actually a soft focus that created a really nice effect on certain photos. I bought this lens with some other few Russian lenses. I enjoy it very much. I can use it in Av priority and renders a great image. Good for portrait from a safe distance. Almost as good as its originator, the CZJ Sonnar. The same as the CZJ in many cases, almost a tie. I finally got this lens, I thought that my SMC Pentax K135f2.5 was going to beat it, but not. It is a tie. This lens rocks, it is easy to use and in Av pritorty does not require the stop down with the green button. The K135 still is the King, but the CZJ is more user-friendly and I can shoot birds in flight. The best discovery I havde found si the use of this lens as a marco, it does not have a macro per se, but it focus so neat and close up that it deserves. This lens bit by far the Jupiter 37A and by a small margen the Tair 11A both in the 135mm f2.8 range. I will be posting some pics later. http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6038/6381097321_afdd38b4f9_b.jpg Dew on Flower with Bee by Palenquero, on Flickr Here is a crop of the above: http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6217/6381520119_a311e6c883_b.jpg Bee (Crop) by Palenquero, on Flickr

I bought this lens after I saw its 20-blade aperture. However, it has become the one I use the most of my (now) five 135mm lenses. It is just perfect. The quality of the photos is similar to the SMC Takumar 85mm f1.9. The bokeh is just the best I have seen. The lens is pre-set, that is, one ring is set to the desired F, then focus wide open, then use the other f ring to stop down to the desired (set) F. You can observe the depth of field also and make any corrections if you want. It is just outstanding. I use it mostly in AV priority with my K5. I do recommend this lens. The problems is the time it takes to come from Eastern Europe. The price is OK, trying to go up, but stays ok. I will post some photos later on. --------------------------- http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6117/6317349580_2696d629a1_b.jpg Mr Lincoln by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6119/6317348742_c409553aa6_b.jpg Blue Bokeh by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6228/6316829079_a65eb9cae9_b.jpg Just Another Rose by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6036/6317348492_2f93f4180f_b.jpg Condesa de Castilla by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6237/6317348378_c31ee30ca8_b.jpg Rosa Rosada by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6038/6316828581_55713b3c8d_b.jpg Rose Madder by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6058/6316521407_fab51e2f1f_b.jpg Rosa Leaves by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6106/6317040844_2e8df0915b_b.jpg Carriage by Palenquero, on Flickr

This lens is very hard to learn to use, because of that some people give up and sell it. Others will call it soft wide open, others will call it terrible for out doors. The truth is, that this lens is perfect and works as it was designed to work. I only recommend you buy this lens if you are a real photographer and specifically need this thin depth of focus for creative photography. This is not for the amateur who just want a super fast lens to shoot any what he or she wants. No, this lens is for someone with a purpose. Do not buy this lens instead of a 50mm f1.4 or f1.7, they have different purposes. This lens is just for pros. That being said, I love this lens. After a steep learning curve (I am not a professional photographer), I finally learned to deal with this beast and am very happy with it. I do recommend this to anyone who wants to do real creative photography. I believe the difference with the Pentax A 50mm f1.2 could be mostly in price. I do not believe in focus or better coating. This lens is really well made and works just as designed. BTW, I have the Porst Color Reflex MC Auto with an aperture scale from f/1.2 to f/22. I understand that there is one version that only goes to f/16. I just got this lens after I realized I could not afford the Pentax A* 135mm f1.8. This lens is wonderful, it comes in a M42 mount that works wonderfully with the genuine Pentax/M42 adapter (remember, the adapter goes on the camera first, then the lens is easily screwed in or out.) I will be posting some photographs as soon as I have the time. I strongly recommend this lens. Get it before it goes up in price. -------------- http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6076/6062730821_5df93037b1_o.jpg Porst135mmf1.8-Heron by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6024/6019838559_a98018b89e_o.jpg Porst 135mm f1.8 - Fountain with finch by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6029/6019839511_921927f8dd_o.jpg Porst 135mm f1.8 - Rose Bokeh by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6006/6003943605_67a15c1af7_o.jpg Sculpture in Laguna by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6030/5992533269_b199828004_o.jpg Porst135mmf1.8-CandleHolder2 by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6007/5992532737_e45acf75c9_o.jpg f1.8-Porst135mmf1.8-Caracol by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6004/5992533717_52444d0978_o.jpg Rancho Santa Margarita by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6002/5993094374_21cfde02fd_o.jpg Porst135mmf1.8-VistaPrimera by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6009/5993091464_0e58c683c0_o.jpg Porst135mmf1.8-Grapevine by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6020/5992532657_97ec26b689_o.jpg Porst135mmf1.8-Colibri5 by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6015/5992532001_159e86f704_o.jpg Porst135mmf1.8-TreeRSM1 by Palenquero, on Flickr ================================= This is an edit to confirm that I love this lens after several months of using it. I am describing here the Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 17mm f/3.5 (151B), the one without the filters. I found this lens very easy to use, provide excellent and sharp images, a bit soft wide open. It works with my Pentax Kx wonderfully. I have not seen any of the bad stuff mentioned above, maybe because this is the 151B version of the lens. One image is worth 1000 words, so, I will let the images speak for themselves: (Please check the Exif data for more detail on how the photos were taken) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2735/5814156088_f62cb01775.jpg Mission Santa Barbara Chapel - HDR by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2716/5814147590_d55d3531d5.jpg Mission Santa Barbara Hall by Palenquero, on Flickr Same image as above, but in HDR: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2401/5814147630_1a1870f305.jpg Mission Santa Barbara Hall - HDR by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2660/5814147524_33a8f92971.jpg Santa Barbara Mission - HDR by Palenquero, on Flickr Here are two photographs, taken using HDR (built in the Pentax Kx): http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2637/5813669657_bcb7130f3c.jpg San Juan Bautista Hotel - HDR by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5235/5813669419_9b08b6eb90.jpg San Juan Bautista Carriage Museum 2- HDR by Palenquero, on Flickr

I got the Pro II version, this is the version that Tokina claims it is better than the original because they added extra coating and aespherical element. Some people who tested both say that it is a tie between the Pro I and the Pro II. This Pro II can use a screw in hood and the bayonet style hood. I have both. I bought this lens after seeing all the reviews here, and reading reviews in the internet. I was looking for either this version or the Pro I. I was lucky to get this one. I chose this one over the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8, and do not regret it. This is a wonderful lens. Right after I opened the box from Adorama and shot with flash my first photo, I saw how sharp and neat the photo was. Next day, I shot around the yard, garden and got even happier. I usually post photos (one image is worth 1,000 words), so I will be posting some as soon as I can download them. In the meantime, this lens gets an A+ from me. This lens is a keeper for ever. Get one if you find it. Certainly, I would not recommend the cheaper version PRO SV because I have read not so good things about that version. However, I have not seen or used a PRO SV lens. Be careful on what version you purchase, the stellar ones are the first two PRO editions. ------------ http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6028/5945563636_4983622b11.jpg Bowers Museum by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6097/6224975069_55739e1e73_b.jpg Monarch *- Pentax Kx + Tokina 28-70mm f2.6 by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6222/6224975029_95583c1a1f_b.jpg Monarch - Pentax Kx + Tokina 28-70mm f2.6 by Palenquero, on Flickr http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6118/6224974945_d1af2de816_b.jpg Paella - Pentax Kx + Tokina 28-70mm f2.6 by Palenquero, on Flickr

The price is complete with the hood, UV MC filter and tripod collar I had to purchased separately. This lens is the perfect lens. With the hood and MC, no signs of flare at all. I have the 19AH too and the image quality is better, that should tell you everything. It is as heavy as any of the other lenses in this range and aperture. More later when I have pics to show and time to upload them. ---------------

I bought this from Adorama because I needed one 1.4x TC and the others were to expensive and could not find one. It was a great surprise, this TC works, it has decent lenses and does not change the IQ significantley. It is a great alternative to the expensive Tamron 1.4x. I recommend it.

This lens has become my wildlife flower, plants, people, bushes, and anything that has beautiful colors. This lens makes those color shine in a very sharp way. A close up (1:2 to 1:4) easy to use allow to take flowers, insects at a distance that does not scare the models. This is indeed the best zoom in this range (..and there are many). It is an excellent companion for its bigger brother 60-300mm, and the elder brother 300mm f.28, which I have and love. You have to get an adaptall-Pentax PKA adapter (about $90 -$120) so you do not have to worry about stopping down with the green button. Easy to focus. This is a great lens, it commands respect everywhere it goes. The quality of the macro is outstanding, I almost don't use my Tamron 90mm f2.8 anymore. I have been using this lens for everything, to the point that I almost do not use my Pentax FA 100-300mm f4.7 anymore. It is that good, or a bit better. I you see one, grab it. I bought another one before the price goes up. I would give this lens 9.5 (however, since there is no 9.5, I will err on the side of truth) only because I reserve the 10 for it little brother: Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 70-210mm f3.5. Keep in mind that you need to buy an adaptall converter to Pentax PKA (about $120 more). It is worth if you want nice pictures. I just got this lens and am in the process of using it and producing some photographs to post here. The lens is manual focus since it came with an Adaptall-e PKA adapter. Focussing is easy. ----------- More than a month later, I am getting the hang of this heavy lens and I am operating it manually handheld. I also got the front normal filter. It is not normal, it is thicker than any other I have purchased and it is multicoated, and it does make a difference in the sharpness. I am still getting the hang of it, but here are some preview photos, uncropped and without pp (except the last one and the third one, all other have not been cropped). ======================== A year after the initial review, I have come to upgrade my review. This lens is wonderful and with the 1.7xAFA becomes autofocus (AF). The IQ is unsurpassed. Below I just added one more bird. ==================== Few month after the first anniversary, I can tell that I can control this heavy lens very well. Right below is a sample with the 140TC that comes with it (1.4 TC): http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7113/7578542498_03187cebb2_c.jpg TamronSPAdaptall300mmf2.8+1.4xTC-FountainDrinkonTop-1 by Palenquero, on Flickr ============================== http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7167/6815782219_0559cf45e9_b.jpg TamronSPAdpat300mmf2.8-Pajarillo2-2185 by Palenquero, on Flickr ----------- https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2913&pictureid=22260 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2913&pictureid=22259 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2913&pictureid=22257 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2913&pictureid=22256 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2913&pictureid=22254 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2913&pictureid=22253 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2913&pictureid=22251

I am rating this lens 10 without adding the words "for its price." This is an overall excellent lens that impressed me and surprised me. I just wanted to try to see what an unexpensive 400mm would look like and was positively surprised. I am shooting birds hand holding this lens. It also comes with a tripod collar. My lens is actually the: SPIRATONE - SHARPSHOOTER TELEPHOTO- 400mm f6.3 Filter size 72mm. I will be posting pictures as they came out of the camera soon. I am really impressed with this lens. I do not see any connector to the camera, so I am not yet sure how the metering is done. I just attached to the camera and started shooting. There is an aperture ring and there is another ring with the letters O - C that moves and moves the other aperture ring. I presume you have to focus with the first ring, then stop down with the other ring, that is how I am using it, but it is very easy to use. I love this lens. If I evaluated this lens based on the price I paid, I would give an 11. This is an update after several days now. I was reading about the preset aperture lens like this one. First, by setting a fix aperture, they were able to economize and provide a high quality glass, and the rest of the money to provide the well constructed tubings. The tripod collar is there not because the lens is heavy, but because it takes some time to use this lens. Meaning, you have focus at your set aperture, then stop it down with another ring, etc. Unbelievable, I can do that while shooting birds handheld.

This lens has become my only kit lens that I take anywhere. I bought it after looking at the reviews in this forum and after seeing the photograph of the airplane landing above this comment. The macro is just formidable. I use it more often that any. It is a portrait lens too. All the good things said above. I do not understand the comments about the cheap built. This lens looks and feels sturdy. It is the II version. All automatic. The macro botton is just fine, you have to read the manual to understand how to use it the first time after that is just fine. The first picture is out of focus, it is my fault. I have a focussed image in Flicker. Every single book I read about shooting with zooms and every professional seminar I have attended confirmed that zooms beyond 200 mm MUST be used with a good not only sturdy by heavy tripod (This lens needs as a minimum, a Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs +Manfrotto 498RC2 Ball Head with Quick Release) if you want professional looking good quality photographs. I have noticed that many reviewers talk about a lens being soft at certain focal distances, but what I have experienced in similar occasions, is that if I use a good tripod, my photos come always sharp. That is how I get the best of every lens, zoom or not. When I must hand hold the zoom, I try to increase the shutter speed to a number higher or equal to the focal length for acceptable shots (that means a higher ISO or more grain, or noise). I read that a photographer must marry his/her tripod for nature/wildlife shots. I gave 10 to this lens because there is no 9.5. The only negative aspect that I have seen in this lens is that when AF to the moon at about 90 degrees (almost vertical), the camera screw has a hard time getting it to focus. It is too heavy for the Pentax screw. Adding an SDM would have helped on that. The creeping that happens in mostly all big zooms is fine, you can control it when you get more experience. This lens is heavy and it should be used with a heavy tripod (as one should with all zooms larger than 200mm). However, it is light enough for a normal-to-strong person to hand hold it for shooting birds. It takes a good technique to shoot a zoom hand-held. I happened to be an ex-sharp shooter, so I know how to minimize the shaking. Even then, you will notice some softness in the hand-held shots. On the tripod, I use it with remote control shooting. I found this lens beautiful and fascinating and pretty much it is the only one I use, I have put to the side my faithful FA 100-300mm f4.7(metallic looking) zoom. The image quality is excellent in every focal distance, including 500mm. I have used it with a 1.7x AF converter and a heavy tripod and still get acceptable pictures. However, it is asking too much. When using a 1.7x or 2X converter, you are stopping down 2 f-stops making it slow. So, I do not recommend you using those converters. If you have a 1.4x AF converter and a sturdy heavy tripod, that will work. Again, a good tripod and remote shooting is a must. This lens is impressive and it extends very long making the need for a tripod even greater. If you just want a zoom, made of light plastic, that Auto-Focus for you and gives you sharp pictures at 500mm when you are riding on a bike and having a beer, etc, this is not your lens. Good luck finding it. I recommend this lens if you are serious about becoming a nature/environmental photographer because to become that you need patience and will have to use a tripod. Do not buy this lens if you are not going to buy a good sturdy heavy tripod with a good head. I wish this lens had QUICK SHIFT FOCUS, to allow for focussing manually while in AF, like the new Pentax kit lenses. If you are serious about becoming a professional, or serious nature amateur photographer, buy this lens. It is the cheaper alternative to buying the Bigma (about $1,500 -- the Sigma 50-50mm). I will post some handheld pics taken with my lens for your viewing pleasure. DID I MENTION THAT YOU NEED TO BUY A STRONG STURDY HEAVY TRIPOD FOR THIS LENS?? https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2413&pictureid=17494 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2413&pictureid=17493 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19057 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2413&pictureid=17492 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19056 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19055 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19054 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19053 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19052 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19051 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19050 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19049 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19048 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19047 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19046 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19044 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19043 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19042 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19041 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2570&pictureid=19040

As it turnout, it replaced my DA 18-50mm kit lens. This is the lens I carry up and down, plus a zoom. I am absolute impressed with this lens and am searching and studying and comparing the whole Tokina line to make sure I do not miss any. I have not found anything that I do not like on this lens. I strongly recommend it. The lens is heavy and feels and looks like built to last. It is easy to use manually, as well as automatic focus. ------------ Update: I bought the hood from B&H. I had to wait six months after I ordered. It is not that big, but helps a lot in plain sunshine.

I bought this by mistake. I meant to buy the Pentax 1.7x adapter for my M lenses. However, I kept it to use it with my FA lenses and it does work for fast lenses mostly. I use my FA 50mm f1.4 to obtain a focal distance of about 80mm and the fstop goes to f2.5, still fast. I used it with my FA 100-300mm f4.7, and it moves it nicely, but it slows down a lot at 300 (x1.7) or about 500mm. So, I do get a to use it with this lens at at 350-400mm well in decent light conditions. The lens FA100-300 is very sharp, probably the best sharpness in that range of variable f. I have a 2x Sears for my M-50mmf4 lens and obtain formidable macros. Better than the extension tubes. Although someone said bad things of the lenses in the converter. This is a good thing to have, but do not expect much. I tried it with my kit lenses DA 50-200mm and the results were bad. Althougth it moves and focus, the image enlargement was not there, and the DA 50-200 is a good lens. I guess no TC works well with the DA lenses. I see now an explosion of those converters on eBay and I am afraid, because the cost is almost ridiculous, that says a lot about the lens they use.

This lens is not a Bigma, however for the price is one of the best. I was really dissapointed when I purchased it but I have learned to like with the use. For example, it can be sharp sometimes (I blame it on me, since it is MF on a digital SLR), but most of the time is soft. Not a bad softness, this softness can be used to create really nice photographs and portraits in the outdoors. I am exploring that and love it. I found that on my Kx, I do not have to stop it down like I have to do with the Pentax primes. It is tricky to change to macro, you have to grab with the tip of the fingers the fstop ring and then the other part and force them in different directions, following the arrow. I found this lens to be a jewel in macro. It is really a close up. It produces a beautiful bokeh while a really sharp focussed object. I have some photos of this closeup with flowers, but I will be using it for people. I am sure it will be really nice. I recommend you get one. For the low price it commands, there is little to lose and lots to gain. https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16818&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16817&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16816&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16810&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16809&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16808&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16807&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16806&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16805&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16804&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16811&thumb=1 https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=2351&pictureid=16812&thumb=1
