Have been using this for some six months now, mainly for wildlife and action photography. A well built lens. Optically excellent, good image quality and excellent sharpness at all apertures. Stopping down - even a little - improves contrast. However, shooting wide open all day is not a problem. Not a trace of CA or PF. AF works fine without TC`s. Adding a 1,4 x TC slows AF down somewhat. A 2 x TC turns it into a MF lens. Highly recommended.

This lens replaced my old faithfull MF Tamron 300/2,8 a year and a half ago. Solid construction and pretty good optics, too. IQ and sharpnes pretty good wide open, and very good from f3,5 onwards. Pixel peepers may be able to find some minor purple fringing in areas of extreme contrast. But this is really insignificant, and can easily be corrected in post processing, should it be noticeable. AF works well thanks to the speed of the lens. Also with Sigmas 1,4 x and 2 x teleconverters. As usual, there is some loss of image quality, especially with the 2 x TC. My copy has a little BF in both K10D and K7. However, this could easily be compensated with the AF adjustment in the body. Comes with a CP filter and Sigmas smart filter insertion system allowing the filter to be rotated inside the lens.

This Tamron pro-spec (SP-series) manual focus lens was produced from the 80īs until mid 90īs. I was a happy owner of one of these for about a decade. Optically it is excellent, very sharp and good contrast even wide open. Mechanically a solid construction, all metal and glass. Some people have complained about CA, possibly with copies exposed to harsh treatment. I never had any problems with CA. With the Tamron 1,4 X teleconverter image quality is still good. I also had a Tamron 2 x TC, which is a bit softer. With this I usually preferred to stop down a little. My only criticism is about the mount. Due to the several joints there may be some (minor) rotational play in the mount to the body. However, this never caused any real problems. I can recommend this lens without hesitation. Prices on the second hand market appear to be somewhat below comparable Sigma lenses. Very good IQ and excellent value for the money, provided the copy has not been abused too badly. The lens worked fine on my film bodies as well as my K10D.
