cheap and good, I got a like new condition one, 49mm filter thread, 0.3m min focus distance. on APS-C sensor, give a view of 42mm, good like 50mm on film but wider. with split screen, easy to focus, without focus screen, it is hard to focus. 28mm is a common focal length produced cheap and good by a lot of manufactures, like 50mm f1.7. it is cheaper than 24mm and 35mm in general. and good with 50mm combo as travel light. with 10mm extension tube, it produce 1:1 macro, with 60mm extension tube, it fill a 1cm object in screen with the subject 5mm away from front glass, some one has done with reverse mount the 28mm on extension tube to get better object distance. and search on youtube

I got this lens and has been using it with Takumar 2x A TC and Vivitar 2x MC TC, very good for what it suppose to do. birding, nature shots and shot at a distance. I sold my pentax M 200mm f4 with 2x TC after I got this lens and a vivitar TC; and then I sold this vivitar 100-300 f5 after I got a Tokina 400mm f5.6 (1.2kg, 4m mini focus distance) With this lens, you don't need a 400mm f5.6 for birding or a 90mm f2.8 macro for small bugs; as this vivitar does everything a nature photographer needs, zoom far and also can focus close. Good for birding, at f8, still perform well with teleconvertor; but be careful about CA when shooting toward bright source. It has a rotate zoom ring, stop at each zoom mark precisely, unlike typical 80-200 zoom with push and pull like design; it is internal focus, lens doesn't extend very much with its smooth focus ring, 2 figure can spin it quickly. Built-in hood; In morning, ISO 800 for use in cloudy day, and ISO1600-3000 if you use with 2x TC. shot with 2x TC at 100mm, f8 http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6163/6176567355_2b276ba55d_b.jpg shot with 2x TC at close focus mark http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6177/6176567489_2c6b5c23ae_b.jpg shot with 2x TC at 300mm, on K-x, that is 900mm equvilent, ISO 1600, 1/500, it is sharp, http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7151/6485940637_156729b5a1_b.jpg I like the CA effect. at 300mm with TC. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7169/6485943463_e3495257e5_b.jpg without TC, just the lens itself at 300mm, it is very good color rendering; you need a good split screen on DSLR to focus at f8 precisely, or just use live view to focus. http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6197/6091589841_ff4fac98e2_b.jpg

It is overall good interesting lens to have. It is constant f3.5, which is half stop slower than f2.8 (typical nowadays like Tamron 17-50 f2.8) but this one is full frame. so good for pentax full frame DSLR and film camera. on APS-C digital camera, it is also good, as it saves you from buying 24mm f2.8, 28mm f3.5, 35mm f3.5, 40mm f2.8. and a macro adapter. but it is very heavy for a standard everyday lens (400g-500g) if you used to hang out with a 200g 50mm prime. also in normal mode, its minimum focus distance is 0.8m, which for landscape or street is no issue, but not that convenient. (it take a bit steps to go 5cm macro mode) Focus ring is smooth like oil, and zoom is stiff and stay in place for the focal length mark. CA and flare is a issue, but for a film age lens, I don't mind that. The Sun lens mount is screwable and changable, the mount element seems can be taken out if you good at. but it is not like Tamron adapt-all mount that easy, you have to find the stock mount to fix the mount on, it is an option, but just stick to the native mount. the macro button on the lens is very tricky to use, so I write it here for other's reference. Steps to Turn it into macro mode 1. rotate lens all the way back to 40mm 2. slightly press and push the macro button to the lens front, 3. continue pushing while rotate the zoom ring to 24mm end. 4. now, you got the 1:3.8 macro at rough focus distance of 5cm. Steps to Turn it back into normal mode 1. rotate lens all the way to 24mm 2. slightly press and push the macro button to the lens end side 3. continue pushing while rotate the zoom ring to 40mm end. 4. you will hear a click the it is slided back to place. 5. now you have the normal mode. don't force it to push. it is tricky to practice, but it is good that it has this macro feather. the DAL 18-55 does what it does with AF, but when you put this heavy solid metal on your Pentax K-x, you got a solid feeling with it, kind of attached. it is almost as big as heavy as Pentax Kx itself. in contrast you get a cheapo feeling when you mouting DAL18-55 plastic mount onto your camera. Cats don't like you get 5cm to them, so it is tricky http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7012/6477152947_b5c8189cd5_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7143/6477152677_5609636f82_b.jpg I have also tried Tokina 20-35 f3.5-4.5 mark I and II. this lens beats them on the solid feel, but you know tokina 20-35 is auto focus. I also have Vivitar 19-35 f3.5-4.5 MF lens, at just 300g around, good to travel around, but Sun is solid, you buy the solid feeling more for itself. some online image of it http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7010/6477309031_a01b37e5b6_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7018/6477308881_da02bb4522_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7006/6477308653_93d3a1778b_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7030/6477308283_0f2a9d5c17_b.jpg short url of this page: http://goo.gl/iua7d

very good lens for one that never breaks, and feel solid in hand. does the job as 1:1 http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7171/6477010459_1d9af18fb2_b.jpg When using with a Flash, you don't need to worry about tripod collar or tripod. you can use the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro IS version tripod collar from ebay, with paper stack inside for stable desktop shots http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7157/6477071085_049094b4e3_b.jpg also good as for nature shots at distant. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7002/6477081511_c36fb5444f_b.jpg google short url for this page: http://goo.gl/iePWP
