This lens is no the brightest, but f/2.2 is not as bad, just a 1/3 less than f/2, but what it has is a very special spherical aberration wide open that makes the shots very soft but almost with a glow how soft it renders up to f/4. If you stop it down further it is sharp enough, but what you can do with the lens between f/2.2 and f/4 is almost magical.
The close ups of flowers have an exquisite soft rendering, landscapes becomes almost pastels, portraits becomes Hollywood-esque in a glamorous style you could spend hours in Photoshop to render.
Don't get me wrong, this is not a great normal lens for those walkaround, do it all it all lenses that renders sharp at every aperture, but correctly used you can do some great photography, things you will have to spend a lot of time to do otherwise and get specialized lenses.
The aperture scale is just clicked for full stops, not half stops. Otherwise small and light, with unfortunately a rotating front lens as you focus.

There are no poor lenses, only poor imaginations
Excellent lens for MFT users as a portrait lens - wide open no filters attached and you have a Dynamic Soft Focus setup...
How far do you like to exploit things that cost little or nothing?
DO NOT COMPARE THIS WITH THE FUJINON 55 2.2

This lens is a "body cap" that accompanying my K1000 back when I bought, so it's free.
I use this lens once, and I regret wasting that one roll, even with the cheap film (superia 200) it's not worth shooting with

This is a sharp lens, like most of the other Ricoh primes. Also has little to no CA like other Ricoh primes as well, which is a huge plus. However, like most of the other Ricoh primes color/contrast is not up to par with the good Pentax primes. I have the Pentax-A 1.4 50mm, so this lens does not get used anymore... but if something were to happen to that one I would have no issue going back to this one. It is definitely superior to the Pentax 50mm f/2 (both M and A), but not the 1.7 or 1.4.

Got this together with some other items from the bay.
Let's face it: This is about as cheap as it gets with 50mm lenses.
May be I am just spoilt by using better glass and do not do this lens justice. I also must admit that I did not use it much and my experience is limited to a few test shots.
I really would not recommend this lens:
- maximum aperture f/2.2 is relatively slow
- image quality is relatively poor for a 50 mm fixed focal (usable though when stopped down)
- build quality is poor (rotating front element, plastic feel)
- minimum focus distance is 0.8 m which is better for most other 50mm lenses
As there are many cheap and excellent 50mm lenses out there (e.g. Pentax M 50 1.7) I see little reason to get the riconar and use it on a regular basis.
