Samsung D-Xenon 18-55mm F3.5-5.6
supersize

Description:
This is a rebadged version of the original smc Pentax-DA 18-55 F3.5-5.6 AL kit zoom lens. It was marketed by Samsung for their K-mount (Pentax clone) DSLRs, and is also fully compatible with all Pentax-branded digital bodies.

As Samsung abandoned the K-mount around 2008, this lens did not see a Samsung-branded successor, unlike the Pentax lens which was refreshed with improved optics in 2008.

Note: Samsung hood model number SCH-A52 is interchangeable with the Pentax hood listed below.

I bought this just to give me an AF short zoom, and didn't expect too much from it, it being the Samsung kit lens.
I've been pleasantly surprised by this little lens, well worth keeping in my bag.
I expect there will be some copy variations, and I've been lucky enough to get a good one.

Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 18–55 / 3.5–5.6 lens. If you calculate the difference between the cost of a "kit" kit and just a camera, then it turns out to be relatively small, especially in comparison with the price of any other lens. So, if you are going to buy the first digital SLR, the most correct decision would be to take the “whale” kit. Thanks to the lens included with the camera, it is easy to determine which focal lengths you will need in the future, which lenses you should buy. The "whale" lens will be enough for the first time. But for the low cost you will have to pay with the quality of the picture.

The Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 18–55 / 3.5–5.6 is far from ideal in terms of its optical characteristics. The focal length range is ideal for most types of photography. But the sharpness of the lens is not very high, although with the help of aperture, you can get quite good results. The lens aperture is also low. This can cause a number of problems when shooting in low light.

The focusing speed of this model turned out to be relatively high. The construct does not seem cheap at all. The front optical element of the lens does not rotate, which allows using polarizing filters, for the convenience of rotation of which a special "window" is provided in the hood.

Pros: 35mm f 4.5 extremely sharp and high contrast
Cons: marvellous lens, 18mm not so sharp in corners and CA's
Sharpness: 9    Aberrations: 8    Bokeh: 10    Autofocus: 9    Handling: 9    Value: 9    New or Used: Used    Camera Used: k-5,k-s1,k-x, samsung nx1000 nx 11, fuji x-t100

similar to pentax kit lens. very nice bokeh.usefull with achromatic macro lens on the top.

this lens must be stopped down step by step from 18 to 55mm, if you'll get satisfying results.

+/O 18 mm only for close ups (because of not so sharp corners) f4.5 enough sharp (visible CAs in the corners !)

++ 24mm very sharp f4.5-5.6 (fex CAs in the corners)

+++ 35mm extremely sharp f 5.6 in center, very sharp in corners (very well corrected)

++ 45mm very sharp f 8 (nearly no CAs)

++ 55mm sharp f11. very nice colors, very high contrast (besides 18mm)

I use it from 24 to 55mm. very content with it.but my fovorite focal length is 35mm, because of high resolution

resolution with 24 MP-sensor (fuji) at 35 mm f 6,7 ist phantastic: 85 LP/mm = 170 black and white lines /mm - this is a professional value !

fron 24 to 30 mm recommended

from 35 to 55 mm highly - stopped a few down - recommended

Pros: Light, inexpensive, metal mount, usable range
Cons: no damping manual focus ring,
Sharpness: 7    Aberrations: 7    Bokeh: 6    Autofocus: 6    Handling: 7    Value: 8    New or Used: Used

I bought this lens used on ebay. It seems fine with the exception that it would be nice to have it start at 16 or a 24mm in 35mm terms. I guess the 16-45 is in my future. I find that 24mm is a happy place for me.

Oh, and it would be nice if it were a little faster or wider.

And that manual focus ring needs to be damped. As it stands, it's really difficult to control manual focus while shooting video without looking like you have parkinson's unless you have the hands of a violin virtuoso.

As for the commentary on which version of the Pentax lens this is, I don't know how to confirm the difference between the 11 and 12 element versions. According to this review at pop photo, this lens is the earlier 12 element version.
