| | I found a copy in nearly new condition. As the previous reviewer stated, the build quality is quite good. And it does resemble an old Auto-Takumar. There is a builit-in lens hood which is useful. The tripod collar is a big plus. For a f/5.5 prime, it's quite heavy and a bit larger than others. I've taken a shot of the Full Moon and it resulted in surprisingly high resolution. Shooting normal subjects though, and the focus and sharpness is less precise. Never achieved a tack sharp image even stopped down. I've shot hand-held with a 300mm f/4.5 prime and managed better sharpness. As for color, it's cool/neutral. Organic colors aren't reproduced rich, but sort of lacking. As in the previous review, it can be the cause of lack of micro-contrast. There some fringing, but little chromatic aberrations.
If you can find one as cheap as I did, then it's a fun lens to try for daylight shooting.
BTW, this lens can also be found as a Soligor, and other brands.

| | The Sears 300MM lens is a fine telephoto prime. It is constructed in a very similar fashion to the takumar line. In fact, I can see how many people think there may be some relation. This lens has an Auto/Manual ring located below the aperture ring. It's a heavy lens, but mine came with a built-in tripod mount. Very handy. Image quality is very good, but lens seems to lack the contrast of my other primes. It's really not that big of a deal since I can always add that in PP. A tripod is necessary unless good daylight is available. I'm pleased with this lens. Here is a cool picture I got of a red tail hawk flying over my backyard. | |
