Because of the big zoom range ther are compromises to deal with thie lens / objectiv avec quelches compromis à cause de la grande dimension focale
all over a good lens, but with some weak points / en resumé un bon objectiv, mais avec des faiblesses :
+ good sharpness at 28mm, but stopped down to f 9 - f 13 /  bon piqué à 28 mm, mais avec f 9-13
-/O weak corner sharpness at 28mm, even with f 13 / manque de netteté à 28 mm dans les coins 
-/O some visble corner CAs at 28 mm, even stopped down / à 28 mm quelques ACs visibles, même à diaphragme fermé
+/++ good to very good sharpness from approx. 50 to 150 mm and much more better CAs' correction / entre 50 et 150 mm plus de netteté et la correction des aberrations chromatiques apparaît presque parfaite 
O flare on tele range from 200 to 300 mm / à partir de 200 mm plus de flou

I found this lens in a pawn shop for 40.00 in great like new shape so I grabbed it. Here is a photo of my neighbors cat in a tree at 300 zoom hand held about 20 yards away . I am no photographer ,I'm still learning but I like it. I find its very easy to use on my Pentax K10D. Taken at ISO 100, f13,1/90 sec . 300mm. As far as needing light I think that any lens that you can set at f13 and be really bright at a 1/90 of a sec with your ISO set at 100 as low as it will go is a good lens. ,I just don't think you can ask for more than that especially at full 300mm zoom so you don't really need to worry about carrying around a tripod for that 300 zoom shot. I know that f13 was over kill for this shot but I wanted to show how much light was coming in at that setting . I don't like to go below 1/90 because I know for me with the shake reduction on I can hold it still enough to get a sharp photo at 1/90. My k10D shows noise at 400 ISO so I keep it set on auto from 100 to 200 ISO. limit . So with a lot of lens I have to set the f stop at the wide open setting just to get it to 1/90 of a sec, but I don't have to do that on this lens I can choose what DOF I want down to f13 and even f16 If I have something I can rest on .But F13 is a really big DOF. at anything 50 yards away at 300mm zoom setting. Maybe I just get lucky and get good copies of Sigma lenses but I certainly can't complain about any I have had. I just replaced my 28-105 for this 28-300 and have No complaints. I also because of this lens replaced my Pentax 50-200 and not looking back. I highly recommend these lenses for anyone wanting a good walk around lens that works in almost any situation for the focal length needed and good crisp photos.

This lens is a decent walk around lens, but seems to be a real light hog. It's also a bit softer at long distances than I would like, but decent up close. It was great for my last trip to Nevada/California for wandering around the desert since I did not have to keep swapping lenses in the dusty conditions out there.
My biggest grips is that the zoom lock isn't that good, though I supposed I can send it in for repair under warranty, and of course the biggest gripe of all, which is it zooms backwards! Where I am used to rotating my lenses clockwise to zoom out this one has to be rotated counterclockwise! It's a bit annoying, but I can deal with it.
I did have to send it in to Sigma when I first got it because it was so soft as to be unusable at more than a 20% crop, but they fixed it up, and while it is much better it's still not the sharpest in the world. Still, if you can get over the backwards zooming it's a decent value for the money.

I have used this lens on a K20D and a K200D. It actually works a bit better on the 200, but is still a light hog.
Sharpness is soso, especially at either end of the zoom range.
My main irritation is it 'falls out' (zoom extends) when carrying the camera. I address this by putting a fat rubber band around the lens. Looks ugly, makes handling fiddly but works okay.
Overall, I would say I am pretty dissappointed with this lens but it works OK.

Bought it in Hong Kong and have used it on both the K-7 and K-5 with excellent results both in still pictures as with moving objects.
Great if you want to travel light.

I bought this lens to go with my first DSLR; a K100D . I wanted a reasonably priced walk-around lens and was not prepared to buy more than one lens at that time. I also had several screw-mount Pentax lens from my over 30 years shooting with film. The Sigma 28-300 served its purpose allowing me to learn both how to use the camera and what it was I wanted to shoot. I soon found that if I kept away from the extreme focal lengths(28 and 300) by just a few mm's the images where usually acceptably sharp.
When I upgraded my camera to a K20D I also upgraded my lenses. I would recommend this lens to anyone either on a budget or just starting out in digital photography. I am always dismayed to see total neophytes buying the top cameras and expensive lenses before they have taken a single shot.

Honestly a pretty good lens. The bokeh on this lens was surprisingly nice at F3.5. The focus ring is smooth and the zoom ring is nice and weighted. Here’s an example of the bokeh....

Very nice work horse lens. Now, granted on our smaller sensors the 28mm end should not be considered wide but it certainly allows you a more expanded view than many other zooms. And on the 300mm end... Yes I like the broad range of this lens.
I have not noticed any lens creep in my copy. I can move around a great deal without the weight of the lens causing it to change it's zoom position.
The focus ring moves a short distance in large increments. That is, The difference between sharp and unsharp focus seems to be easily made with a very slight turn, especially when focusing manually.
The compactness of it's size, focus range and along with build and image quality make this a very good lens that serves many situations. The 1:3 magnification ratio at something like 20 inches is also useful from a "super zoom" lens.
There is not much room between the zoom ring and the camera body to access the switch on the aperture ring. So if you are one who likes to use an "A" setting aperture ring manually, beware. There is a bit more room to get your finger on the "A" button of the aperture when the lens is connected to a K-7 but less on the K10. If you have banana size fingers, you quite possible could not even touch the button.
Many who are on a budget should consider this lens before buying the Tamron 70-300 and perhaps even the DA 50-200.
