Soligor chrome -eared, t-mount 135mm F3.5
supersize

Description:
The number of 135mm lenses marketed by soligor over the years are only too numerous. This listing is for one of the more common ones: the 135mm f3.5 with t-mount and the distinctive silver aperture ring with ears. The 17xxxx serial indicates tokina manufacture. There is a similar f2.8 one which should have a separate listing, and also an earlier 135mm f3.5, classic preset with the aperture rings at the front of the lens,.

Soligor 135mm f2.8 tele auto T4 mount.
Soligor 135mm f2.5 .

Interested enthusiasts on MF lenses have put together a code to id the maker of many of the Soligors. This is a tentative synopsis cribbed from relevant threads** (serial numbers beginning..):
1xx../Hxx.. = Tokina;
2xx../ 3xx.. /4xx.../7xx.. = Sun
6xx..= Komine; 8xx.. = ?
9xx.. = Kino;
Txx.. = Tamron;

Pros: cheap, solid, bulit-in hood, not too slow
Cons: flares (wide open), heavy
Sharpness: 8    Aberrations: 7    Bokeh: 7    Handling: 6    Value: 10    Camera Used: Pentax K-5

I happend to buy this lens along with a mamiya 1:1,4 55mm. These old lenses are impressingly solid, just glass and metal... A first look showed a lot of dirt in between the lenses if not something worse... :eek: Nevertheless I was interested in the quality of images this tele-lens would be able to provide. So I mounted it on my K-5 for a walk outside and tried to take some photos. At first I had to find out, how to stop this lens down manually. After some tries and errors I detected a little knob, which I had to push while taking the photo to stop the lens down. ;)
Wide open there is an obvious amount of flare und CA, but stopped down to 5,6 or 8 these problems almost disappaer. The sharpness of this lens is o.k. - very good in relation to the low price. The Bokeh wide open is quite nice, stopped down it is less smooth (of course)
Are there reasons to use this lens instead of a todays telezoom? There is more weight to carry, there is no autofocus and no automatic time/aperture, there is no way of taking snapshots. But it is Old School. I just have to work on the photo I want to take, sometimes even to think :D It reminds me of taking photos as a teen with the old Silette of my father eagerly waiting for my own "latest in technology" Pentax ME Super. And the results can be quite satisfying.
:cool:

Some Photos as an illustration to my review:

Wide open, scaled down to maximal size, slightly sharpened

100%-Crop out of the photo above

Wide open, 100%-crop

Stopped down, 100%-crop

(This is my first lens-review ever, and english for me is a foreign language ... Please help me correct my mistakes! )
