Description:
Classic 1960's preset lens. This is the kid brother to the tele-Tokina 400mm f6.3. Can be found as Soligor (pic 2), Hanimex, Palinar (pic 1), Accura, Lentar, Vemar, Sears, Spiratone, Prinz, Cunor ... et al. The Soligors normally have Hxxxx serial numbers.
Note there is also a very similar Sankor made 300mm f5.5 with its own review page.

This lens is a structurally distinct, if not specifically optically distinct, 4 element design from the (later?) tokina tele-auto 300mm f5.5 that was also (?mainly) marketed as soligor and vivitar, fixed and swappable T4 mounts, separate review here.
Note that the later "chrome eared" soligor 300mm f5.5's and f5.6's are reviewed on their own page.

NOTE that although t-mount is usual on these lenses, there is also a variant with a 47mm thread connection to the lens, not the 42mm thread of the standard t-mount. The Palinar pictured has this 47mm mount (pic 3). This blog page attributes this variant to Hanimex.Something to watch out for.

Pros: Quite sharp, classic metal construction, preset aperture
Cons: long cfd
Sharpness: 8    Aberrations: 7    Bokeh: 8    Handling: 8    Value: 9    Camera Used: K-r, K5

I have handled several examples of these, they have all left a similar impression: optically quite good but I end up never using them because the close focus distance of 6 to 8m (19-25') limits their use. Certainly for birds unless you carry around an extension tube to reduce the cfd you are never close enough to smaller ones to get a really good fill of a frame and have to seriously crop (the coverage at 8m is approx 60cm x 40cm on an apsc pentax according to this calculator). The 400mm f6.3's are to be preferred for that, however I still got some respectable results on my K5, sample below (this was with the palinar lens in pic 1 above).
There is a good review with pics here on mflenses.
