Description:
The Vivitar 35-105mm f/3.5 Close Range Zoom is a rebranded Tokina 35-105mm from tokinas "heavy metal" range (inc. the 100-300mm f5, 2 ring 70-210mm f3.5 ) of the late 1970's. Pushing the zoom ring forward would enter a "Close Range" focusing mode where the zoom ring functioned to control a helical focusing unit that would disengage when the zoom ring was moved back to the "zoom" setting.

Pros: Low cost, built like a tank, great optics overall
Cons: soft when wide open, heavy
Sharpness: 7    Aberrations: 8    Bokeh: 8    Handling: 9    Value: 9    Camera Used: Canon 550D

For the price I paid it (49$ + shipping), it's quite a steal. While it's a bit soft when wide open at f/3.5, closed down to f/5.6 makes it sharper and perfectly usable for photo or video. Sure, at f/5.6 it's not as fast as other lenses, but for a fixed aperture lens, in that price range, delivering that quality, it's a bargain!
Even at f/3.5, if you don't mind soft images, it's usable. It gives that "retro" look!
As many Vivitar lenses, there's a bit of chromatic aberration on either end of the zoom, unfortunately. Purple fringe when 105mm, CA on edges at 35mm. Better at f/5.6 for sure.

Overall, for the price of that lens, considering it gives a good range to work with and that it has a constant aperture, I really like that lens. Not the best, but cheap in price and fairly good in quality!

O/+ some visible CAs at wide open aperture and stopped down in "macro mode"
