Description:
Vivitar 28mm wide angle lenses were made primarily by Kino Optical (Kiron), Tokina and Komine. There is a plethora of different versions see link below. The Kiron versions have serials 22xxxxx, the Komines 28xxxxx serial numbers, the tokinas 37xxxx serial numbers. This review page is specifically for the swappable T4 or TX mount Tokina made versions. Robin Parmars' list (link below) is a little unclear: his T93 is the earliest one, T4 mount, pics 1, 2. This was succeeded by the 58mm filter T91, TX mount, which was itself followed by the 52mm filter, more compact T92. His T94 is actually a t-mount lens that looks similar to the T93.
I have also seen a fixed mount 52mm filter 37xxxx serial f2.8 28mm that looks basically the same as the tokina RMC (or SL) 28mm, this is not even in Parmars list.

Komine versions here.
F2 "close focus" komine listed here.
F2.8 "close focus" komine version listed here.
Kiron versions, later versions by Tokina (37xxxxx) and Cosina (9xxxxxx) need/have a separate listing.

58mm filter
Swappable T4/TX-mount, PK-M (TX) and M42 (T4/TX) mounts available. Note that the TX PKM mount will fit on the early T4 mount lens but won't stop down without a diy modification.
PDF of a T4 mount user manual here.
PDf of a TX mount user manual here.
f/2.8-16, no half stops.
8 aperture blades form star shape.
Focus throw ~ 300deg, anti-pentax rotation.
Minimum focusing distance ~1ft/30cm
Weight without mount 230g

There are a large number of vivitar 28mm variants. They are listed in this blog.
Mount Type: Third-party (adapter required)

Pros: Wide angle, good bokeh, OK for video
Cons: Super Soft, No sharpness at all, Bad IQ, Odd Aperture Control

Yes I understand that you need a 28mm prime. That's good but please never think of buying this lens unless you plan for video shooting. This is a total crap of lenses. Go for Komine or other Pentax/Takumar/Tamron 28mm.

Don;t go destructed by this Photo. I edited it a lot [RAW Shooting]

Pros: solid/metal build
Cons: middling contrast, soft images, corners lose sharpness, hard to focus

I hate this lens, yet I have not sold it. One day I will try it for portraits.

Wide-open and even stopped down some, subjects have a glow around them. Stopped down to f8/f11, only the center is sharp. Minimum focusing distance to me is not close enough, but then I guess that's why there are "Close Focus" 28mms out there.

focused on flower in middle, f4 i believe

this was hyperfocus, f8 I believe --- notice the breakdown at the top, especillay the left corner

Pros: Solid, chunky metal'n glass, swappable mount. natural colours
Cons: IQ average, larger and heavier than most 28's.
Sharpness: 7    Aberrations: 7    Bokeh: 7    Handling: 8    Value: 8    Camera Used: K5, NX20

I have the T4 mount version (Parmars T93), as in pics above. It's a chunky all metal 28mm, larger and weightier than the average 28mm. Mechanics are good, IQ is rather average at best, quite consistent in the centre frame stopped down, but mediocre at the edges wide open. The edges improve steadily as it's stopped down. Here is my landscape test using my 20MPx Samsung NX20 (apsc), you can compare with the same test on a slightly better hanimex (makinon) 28mm, and the distinctly superior Hoya 28mm (also made by tokina BTW).

Usable of itself, but the recommendation has to be to look for the later versions, or a Hoya!

Pros: Build quality, good sharpness, good contrast.
Cons: Aperture f/16 limited to, weight above average
Sharpness: 7    Aberrations: 7    Bokeh: 4    Handling: 7    Value: 8

Built as the objectives of the 60s and 70s is the offspring of Tokina and how this high-quality optical glass and the body of heavy metals. The lens in my possession produces good quality photos, with sufficient contrast and good sharpness. Less beautiful bokeh despite the presence of eight plates, but we know that it is a wide-angle ... If you find a figure raggionevole buy it as well, without thinking of purchasing one Leitz or Zeiss.
